About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Tourmaline is a Pokémon Emerald ROM hack and a loose sequel set in an alternate timeline where events have diverged following the climactic clash between Groudon and Kyogre. While inspired by later-generation mechanics, the game intentionally excludes or reworks certain features to fit its own identity.

The hack blends classic GBA Pokémon design with modern systems, original mechanics, and extensive balance changes. It introduces a brand-new region, Issho, along with a custom Pokédex, new Pokémon types, and a heavily updated battle system that largely aligns with Generation 8 standards, unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Story Overview

Several years have passed since the catastrophic battle between Groudon and Kyogre reshaped the Hoenn region. In the aftermath, humanity’s understanding of Pokémon has grown significantly, fueled by new discoveries surrounding Pokémon origins and unexplained phenomena.

Attention has recently shifted to the nearby Issho region, where an unprecedented wave of discoveries has emerged: reports of entirely new Pokémon species, unfamiliar Pokémon types, and strange environmental effects. Researchers from across the world have gathered to investigate, including May, now serving as an assistant Pokémon Professor.

After receiving your first Pokémon from her, you set out on a journey across Issho to uncover the truth behind these discoveries. As your investigation deepens, a shadowy criminal organization begins to surface—a powerful and mysterious crime syndicate wielding unusually strong Pokémon. Their motives remain unclear, but their influence is spreading rapidly, threatening the balance of the region and possibly beyond.

Key Features

  • Original story, characters, and region – Pokémon Tourmaline features a completely new narrative set in the Issho region, with original characters, locations, and lore that exist in an alternate timeline separate from the official Hoenn storyline.
  • Return of many old characters – Familiar characters from past Pokémon games reappear throughout the story, often in new roles that reflect how time and events have changed them since the Hoenn disasters.
  • Custom regional Pokédex with 386 Pokémon – The game uses a fully curated Pokédex that blends classic Pokémon with regional variants and new species, ensuring balanced progression and variety without overwhelming the player.
  • New regional forms from generations 5–8 – Pokémon from later generations receive brand-new regional forms with altered typings, stats, abilities, and movepools to fit Tourmaline’s mechanics and world design.
  • No Mega Evolution, with some Megas returning as natural evolutions – Mega Evolution is removed entirely, but selected Mega Pokémon have been redesigned as permanent evolutions, integrating them naturally into gameplay and balance.
  • Additional fakemon, including SpaceWorld designs – A limited number of original fakemon appear in the game, including restored and reimagined Pokémon concepts inspired by SpaceWorld beta designs.
  • Updated type chart with Fairy and the new Echo type – Fairy type is fully implemented, alongside a brand-new Echo type designed specifically to counter Fairy and Ghost Pokémon, adding a fresh layer of strategic depth.
  • Four new status conditions – The battle system introduces four custom status effects that expand tactical options beyond traditional conditions like burn or paralysis.
  • Two new weather types – New weather effects have been added, influencing battles in unique ways and encouraging more varied team compositions.
  • Over 60 new moves and 20+ new abilities – Pokémon Tourmaline significantly expands combat variety with dozens of original moves and abilities that interact with the updated mechanics and type chart.
  • Buffs to older Pokémon, moves, and abilities – Many underpowered Pokémon and outdated moves have been improved to remain viable throughout the entire game, promoting team diversity.
  • Battle system updated to Generation 8 standards – Most core battle mechanics have been modernized to match Gen 8 behavior, except where deliberately altered for balance or design reasons.
  • Custom TM and HM system with over 100 total moves – TMs and HMs are completely reworked, offering a broad and flexible move pool without forcing HM dependency for progression.
  • Extensive move tutor support – Numerous move tutors are spread across the region, allowing players to customize movesets without relying solely on TMs.
  • Return of classic features – Fan-favorite mechanics such as the day/night cycle, headbutt trees, and daily events return, enhancing immersion and exploration.
  • User interface improvements – Visual and functional UI changes give the game a distinct identity while remaining intuitive for long-time Pokémon players.
  • Quality-of-life enhancements – Faster text speed, Repel usage prompts, increased bag capacity, and looping menus reduce unnecessary friction and improve overall gameplay flow.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Emulator speed-up may cause unpredictable glitches; frequent saving is strongly recommended.
  • Rare instances of bad eggs appearing in PC boxes; accessing their summary can crash the game.
  • Occasional MissingNo encounters when using Cut or Headbutt—flee immediately and do not interact further.
  • Pokédex issues with new regional forms showing incorrect or missing sprites.
  • Some new Pokémon may display incorrect Pokédex entries upon first capture.
  • Enemy status bar colors may display incorrectly for certain status conditions.
  • Night-time window colors may appear incorrect; re-entering buildings resolves this temporarily.
