About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Sword and Shield Ultimate Plus is a full Game Boy Advance demake of Pokémon Sword and Shield that recreates the Galar adventure within the Pokémon FireRed engine. The hack aims to faithfully adapt the original Nintendo Switch games while maintaining the gameplay style and visual limitations of the GBA.
The original demake project was created by PCL.G and later expanded by other developers. The Ultimate Plus version represents one of the most polished iterations of the project, including bug fixes, new graphics, additional Pokémon, and quality-of-life improvements.
The English version available today was translated and improved by Phantonomy, who also fixed several major bugs from earlier builds that previously caused crashes when opening menus such as the bag or party screen. These fixes allow the hack to run properly on common emulators and even on real GBA-compatible hardware such as reproduction cartridges or FPGA devices.
The result is a surprisingly complete GBA adaptation of Sword and Shield, featuring the full gym challenge, Dynamax mechanics, side quests, post-game content, and hundreds of Pokémon from across multiple generations.
Story Overview
The storyline closely follows Sword and Shield, including the Gym Challenge, the main story, and post-game content from the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra expansions.
Players travel through the Galar region, challenge Gym Leaders, participate in tournaments, and explore new areas to complete their Pokédex and hunt for Legendary Pokémon. Side quests and mystery events provide additional depth to the adventure.
Key Features
- Full Sword & Shield Demake: Complete Galar Adventure on GBA. The hack recreates the story, gym challenge, and overall progression of Pokémon Sword and Shield within the Pokémon FireRed engine.
- Generations 1–8 Pokémon: Large Multi-Generation Pokédex. Pokémon from Generations 1 through 8 are included, along with additional species such as the Hydrapple line, Archeludon, and Hisui starter evolutions.
- Dynamax Battles: Signature Galar Mechanic. Players can Dynamax their Pokémon during battle by pressing Start on a move when Dynamax is available.
- Gigantamax Forms: Expanded Battle Transformations. Certain Pokémon have access to Gigantamax forms during Dynamax battles.
- Mega Evolution and Z-Moves: Multiple Battle Mechanics Combined. The game includes several battle systems from different Pokémon generations, including Mega Evolution and Z-Moves.
- Full Gym Challenge: Traditional League Progression. Players battle gym leaders across the Galar region before challenging the Pokémon League.
- Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra Post-Game: Expansion Content Included. The hack recreates post-game content inspired by both Sword and Shield DLC areas.
- DexNav Integration: Advanced Encounter System. The menu includes a DexNav system that allows players to track and encounter Pokémon more easily.
- Portable PC System: Party Management Anywhere. Players can access the Pokémon storage system from the menu rather than traveling to a Pokémon Center.
- Fly Map System: Faster Travel Mechanic. The Corviknight taxi system has been replaced with a key item that allows quick map-based fast travel.
- New Side Quests: Expanded Optional Content. Several additional quests are included beyond the main storyline.
- New Music and Graphics: Visual and Audio Enhancements. The game features new background music, updated battle backgrounds, and improved sprites.
- Camping Feature: Pokémon Interaction Mechanic. Players can interact with their Pokémon outside of battle through a camping system.
- Pseudo-Randomizer Mode: Optional Randomized Encounters. Players can enable a pseudo-randomizer by interacting with a notice in the player’s bedroom.
- Post-Game Legendary Hunts: Endgame Challenge Content. Legendary Pokémon become available to hunt and capture after completing the main story.
Known Bugs & Issues
- Pokémon Center Movement Bug: Running repeatedly from the front to the back of a Pokémon Center may cause a memory issue that freezes interactions with Nurse Joy or the PC. Leaving the building resets the issue.
- Fly Map Glitches: The Fly Map may behave incorrectly in certain locations.
- Text Box Visibility Issue: Some emulators may display invisible text boxes during certain scenes (for example after defeating Piers).
- Hammerlocke Event Crash Risk: A rare crash may occur after defeating Opal during the Hammerlocke event. The game includes a warning recommending players save after this battle.
- Menu Performance Issue: Changing the in-game Button Mode to anything other than “Help” may slow down menu performance.
