Pokémon Palimpsest is a short experimental ROM hack built around strategic battle puzzles rather than traditional Pokémon progression. Instead of traveling through gyms or catching a team of Pokémon, the entire experience revolves around solving battles using one constantly evolving Pokémon.
The game places players in a strange world where gods act like modern celebrities—launching startups, starring in movies, and even running for president. Trainers compete in an exam designed to impress these divine figures and earn prestigious internships.
The core mechanic revolves around “prayers” that allow your Pokémon to permanently copy abilities, species, moves, and items from opponents. Over time, these choices reshape your Pokémon into something completely different, making every battle a strategic puzzle.
Story Overview
In a strange modern world where gods run startups, headline blockbuster films, and even campaign for political office, ambitious trainers compete in a sacred test known as the Ascendancy Exam.
This exam determines who might rise to divine recognition and earn the opportunity to work for the gods themselves—often in the form of coveted minimum wage internships.
But on the morning of the exam, disaster strikes.
You oversleep.
Because of your late arrival, you are punished by the examiners. Instead of receiving a proper starter Pokémon, you are forced to begin the challenge with a Pokémon that has no moves and cannot gain experience. As if that weren’t enough, your punishment also includes experiencing the worst possible luck in every battle you face.
With the odds completely stacked against you, your only option is to rely on faith.
Each battle becomes a puzzle where prayer is your only tool. By invoking divine powers, you can reshape your Pokémon mid-adventure—copying moves, abilities, and even entire species from your opponents.
Whether you succeed or fail depends entirely on how well you use these blessings to survive the impossible challenges ahead.
