About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Monster Hunter Emerald is a full crossover ROM hack that merges the worlds of Pokémon and Monster Hunter by replacing every Pokémon with Monster Hunter creatures. Instead of redesigning the entire game, the hack keeps the original Emerald structure intact while transforming its core identity through its roster.

Developed over 20 months, including collaboration with a small team, this project focuses on delivering a faithful Pokémon-style experience using Monster Hunter monsters, rather than turning the game into something completely different.

The hack introduces over 100 monsters, each with custom sprites and adaptations to fit within Pokémon mechanics. While the story remains mostly unchanged, the gameplay feels fresh due to the entirely new creature ecosystem and adjusted mechanics.

Key Features

  • Level Caps: Integrated to balance progression.
  • Physical/Special Split: Modern battle mechanics to distinguish between physical and special moves.
  • Monsters Replacing Pokémon: Over 100 Monster Hunter monsters replace all Pokémon encounters, complete with custom sprites, shinies, and team icons.
  • Monster Evolution System: Instead of traditional Pokémon evolutions, some monsters evolve using Evolution Stones after reaching maturity. Basic evolution is still present.
  • Monster Hunter-Themed Items: Many items are renamed and reimagined to align with the Monster Hunter universe.
  • Updated Moves: Several moves from Gen 4 and new moves have been added, with updates to their power and effects to match their modern counterparts.
  • Type Resistance Changes: Certain types have received updated resistances, adding strategic depth to battles.
  • No Support for Optional Modes: Modes like the Battle Frontier, breeding, and Trick House are unsupported. Bugs may appear in these areas.
  • No Backsprite Customization: While there are custom front sprites for the monsters, backsprites have not been created due to the complexity of handling 200+ different sprites.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • No Unique Backsprites: The hack includes only front sprites and icons due to limitations.
  • Unsupported Features: Areas like the Battle Frontier, Trick House, and rebattling trainers may contain bugs as they haven't been adapted for the hack.
