About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Inkwell is a unique mystery-puzzle-roguelike ROM hack of Pokémon Emerald, created collaboratively by DizzyEgg (known for PokéEmerald Expansion) and Unfolding. Unlike traditional Pokémon games, Inkwell focuses on procedurally generated floors, permanent and per-run upgrades, character synergies, and a narrative-driven mystery for players to uncover. The game was originally developed for Team Aqua's Romhacking Contest 2 with the theme "Myth".

Story Overview

In Pokémon Inkwell, players navigate a roguelike adventure full of mystery, puzzles, and exploration. The story is interwoven with gameplay, and clues are scattered across the environment for players to piece together.
  • The narrative meanders between cutesy and foreboding settings, creating a unique tone that alternates between lighthearted humor and mysterious tension.
  • Characters you unlock each have unique abilities and synergies, affecting combat and progression throughout each run.
  • Every playthrough is different thanks to randomized floor layouts, enemies, and items, keeping the experience fresh and challenging.

Key Features

  • Multiple Playable Characters: Each character has different abilities and synergies, offering varied strategies and replay value.
  • Roguelike Progression: Permanent and per-run upgrades allow players to become stronger over time while still facing challenging encounters.
  • Custom Mechanics: Includes DizzyEgg’s overhauled scaling and experience system, as well as carefully crafted item and enemy randomization.
  • Puzzle & Mystery Elements: Elaborate story breadcrumbs are scattered throughout the game, encouraging players to think critically to unravel the narrative.
  • Visuals & Sprites: Custom tilesets, maps, and sprites created by the team, including contributions from the PMD Sprite Repository and other artists.
  • Music: Features tracks inspired by Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and selections from Aichiya’s voice group.
  • Humor & Easter Eggs: Unfolding adds lighthearted humor and references to previous works, creating charm in unexpected moments.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Being a story-driven roguelike, some runs may be unpredictable, and certain randomized elements can occasionally generate unusual scenarios.
  • Minor graphical or mapping quirks may occur due to the custom tilesets and sprites.
  • As with any ROM hack, save file corruption can occur if patched incorrectly or used with incompatible emulators. Always back up your save files.
  • Some puzzles and story elements may require careful observation; skipping or rushing may lead to confusion.

A: Yes! Inkwell is a roguelike with procedurally generated floors, per-run upgrades, and different character synergies, making each run unique.

Q: Do I need to unlock all characters to complete the story?
A: No. Unlockable characters offer alternative playstyles and strategic options, but the main story can be completed with any character.
