About This ROM Hack

Dark Rising: Rebirth is a story-driven sequel/continuation within the Dark Rising universe, taking a much darker narrative direction. It blends modern battle mechanics, mission-based structure, and competitive-style difficulty into a campaign where Pokémon are no longer humanity’s partners — but its rulers.

This hack leans heavily into challenging battles, restricted resources, and plot progression through missions, rather than the classic badge-collecting structure.

Story Overview

Seven years after the events of Dark Rising 2 and Order Destroyed, the mythical Pokémon Hoopa has trapped Arceus in an eternal slumber, throwing the universe into chaos.

With divine order gone, Pokémon now dominate the world. Humans are treated as tools or food, forced to either serve Hoopa or rebel.

You play as a mysterious woman with no memory of her past, serving as a grunt under this oppressive system. As you rise through the ranks, lost memories begin to surface — memories that may hold the key to breaking Hoopa’s control and restoring balance.

The narrative explores themes of identity, morality, power, and corruption, making it one of the more mature storylines in GBA ROM hacking.

Key Features

  • Competitive Battle Ruleset: No item usage in battle except held items, and no automatic free switch after defeating an opponent’s Pokémon (Shift/Set style adjustable).
  • Mission & Rank System: Progression is tied to missions rather than gyms, with rank-ups unlocking better rewards and resources.
  • Restricted Hub Access: Shops and healing are primarily available before and after missions, increasing difficulty and planning.
  • Pokémon from Gen 1–8: A wide roster spanning multiple generations.
  • Modern Battle Mechanics: Fairy type, updated moves, items, and mechanics aligned with Gen 8 standards.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Player sprite glitches after opening the shop menu (resolves after closing)
  • EXP bar may display incorrect values during battle (status screen shows correct value)
  • Some Pokémon names display spacing issues in battle (e.g., Sinistea)
  • Surging Strikes hits once instead of multiple times (power adjusted as compensation)
  • HP bar numbers may behave oddly when overhealing with draining moves
  • Checking EVs/IVs from the PC instead of party may crash the game
