About This ROM Hack

Pokémon My Life is a highly personal and experimental Pokémon FireRed ROM hack created as the first ROM hacking project by its developer. Unlike traditional Pokémon hacks, this project is structured as an autobiographical reinterpretation of the game, where the original 386 Pokémon are replaced with “memories” representing important moments from the creator’s life.

The hack is described as a creative mix of personal storytelling and surreal game design. Instead of conventional Pokémon species, the world is populated by abstract and symbolic replacements that reflect both positive and negative experiences from the developer’s past. This results in a deliberately unusual and sometimes chaotic reinterpretation of the classic FireRed structure.

All sprites were reportedly created manually in Microsoft Paint, reflecting a nostalgic and personal development approach rather than professional asset pipelines. The result is intentionally rough, experimental, and emotionally driven rather than technically polished.

Despite its unconventional nature, the project includes functional gameplay systems and expanded mechanics, making it both a playable ROM hack and a personal creative expression.

Story Overview

The story of Pokémon My Life is a metaphorical retelling of the author’s life, portraying both positive and negative experiences through battles, encounters, and progression.

Rather than focusing on gyms, leagues, or traditional goals, the narrative emphasizes personal growth, struggles, and memories, expressed through custom-created species and increased difficulty. The game uses the Pokémon framework as a storytelling device, blending gameplay with autobiography.

Key Features

  • Autobiographical Narrative Design: The hack represents important moments from the developer’s life, including emotional highs and lows, reimagined through gameplay.
  • 386 Custom Species: Every Pokémon from the original FireRed has been replaced with a new “memory”-based creature, many of which are not Pokémon in concept or design.
  • Fairy Type Implementation: Introduces the Fairy type into the Gen III engine, expanding type interactions and balance.
  • Increased Difficulty: Battles are more challenging than standard FireRed, reflecting the serious and sometimes harsh tone of the story.
  • Complete Catchability: All new species can be encountered and captured during normal gameplay.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Due to the unconventional nature of the hack and extensive asset replacement, minor inconsistencies or balance issues may occur. No major game-breaking bugs are widely reported, but the hack prioritizes expression over mechanical perfection.
