About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Water Blue is a simple but thoughtful improvement hack of Pokémon FireRed created to answer a fun question: what if “Water Blue” existed alongside FireRed and LeafGreen? Instead of reinventing the game, this hack focuses on refining the original Kanto experience with modern mechanics and accessibility improvements.
The core identity of this project is staying faithful while fixing limitations. You still get the classic FireRed storyline and progression, but with all Kanto Pokémon obtainable, trade evolutions removed, and multiple quality-of-life upgrades that make the game smoother and less restrictive.
It’s clearly a first project by the developer, and while it doesn’t try to be massive or experimental, it succeeds as a clean, playable, and accessible upgrade to vanilla FireRed.
Story Overview
The story follows the same events as Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.
You begin as a young trainer starting your journey in Kanto with the goal of becoming the Indigo League Champion. Along the way, you battle Gym Leaders, face off against your rival, and defeat Team Rocket’s criminal operations. After earning all 8 badges, you challenge the Elite Four and the Champion to claim the title yourself.
No major narrative changes are introduced.
