About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Red: Proud Eyes Edition V4.0 is a full enhancement and rebalance of the original Pokémon Red experience. It does not rewrite the story, but instead focuses on refining nearly every gameplay system while keeping the classic Kanto journey intact.

The goal of this hack is clearly to make Pokémon Red feel more modern, challenging, and refined, without changing its identity. Trainers, Gym Leaders, wild encounters, and progression systems have all been adjusted to create a more consistent and balanced playthrough.

Visually, the game also receives a noticeable upgrade through 2nd-generation style graphics, giving the original Game Boy experience a slightly more polished presentation while still preserving its nostalgic look.

Key Features

  • Second-Generation Visual Update: The game uses Generation 2–style graphics, enhancing Pokémon sprites and visual presentation while retaining Game Boy compatibility.
  • Rebalanced Trainer Battles: All rival encounters, Gym Leaders, and Elite Four teams have been carefully edited to provide improved balance and increased challenge.
  • Modified Pokémon Experience System: Pokémon EXP gains have been adjusted to create smoother progression and reduce uneven level spikes.
  • Updated Wild Pokémon Encounters: The levels and species found in grass, caves, and water have been reworked for better pacing throughout the game.
  • Revised Pokémon Move Sets: Starting move sets and learnable moves have been updated to improve battle variety and strategic depth.
  • Improved Catch Rates: Catch difficulty has been rebalanced to reduce frustration while maintaining challenge.
  • Gameplay Quality Improvements: Poké Mart inventories, casino prizes, in-game Pokémon trades, TM rewards from Gym Leaders, and Professor Oak’s aide requirements have all been refined for better flow.
