About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Perla is an ambitious Sinnoh-inspired ROM hack built on the Pokémon Ruby engine, aiming to bring the Generation 4 Pokémon experience into the GBA era.

Instead of focusing on full mechanical accuracy, the project prioritizes visual identity, atmosphere, and early-story recreation, giving players a recognizable but reimagined version of Sinnoh on hardware that originally never supported it.

The hack is still in beta, so its scope is currently focused on:

  • Early progression of the Sinnoh storyline
  • Visual upgrades inspired by DS-era Pokémon games
  • Reworked maps and environmental presentation

The main goal is to capture the feeling of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl, not to perfectly replicate every system.

Story Overview

The story closely follows the opening events of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl.

You play as a boy or girl who encounters Professor Nanakamado (Professor Rowan), whose briefcase has been attacked by a wild Starly (Mukkuru). With no other option, you must choose one of the Sinnoh starter Pokémon from the bag to defend him:

  • Turtwig
  • Chimchar
  • Piplup

From there, your journey begins in the Sinnoh region, where you will:

  • Catch Generation 4 Pokémon
  • Challenge newly designed Gym Leaders
  • Confront Team Galactic
  • Explore a reimagined Sinnoh world adapted to the GBA engine

The narrative aims to mirror the Diamond & Pearl storyline while adapting it to the technical limits of Pokémon Ruby.

Key Features

  • Sinnoh Region Recreation: The game introduces a brand-new region based on Sinnoh, replacing Hoenn entirely.
  • Generation 4 Starters: Players can choose Turtwig, Chimchar, or Piplup at the very start of the game.
  • New Graphics: Updated visual assets inspired by Pokémon Diamond & Pearl enhance the overall presentation.
  • Custom Tilesets: New tiles are used throughout the region to better reflect Sinnoh’s architecture and environments.
  • New Scripts: Story events, interactions, and progression are rewritten to match the Sinnoh narrative.
  • D/P Pokémon Sprites: Pokémon sprites are based on Generation 4 designs where possible.
  • Diamond & Pearl Overworld Style: Character overworld sprites are redesigned to resemble the DS-era look.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • The hack is still in beta, so crashes or progression issues may occur
