About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Mirage of Tales: A New Age Dawns is an ambitious story-driven Pokémon ROM hack that introduced many of the core ideas later refined in Mirage of Tales 2.0. Built on Pokémon FireRed, this version focuses heavily on role-playing mechanics, career selection, and player-driven narrative progression, moving away from the traditional badge-based Pokémon structure.

This hack replaces standard Pokémon progression systems with new mechanics such as licenses instead of badges, profession-based gameplay, and multiple branching storylines. While still in beta, it laid the foundation for the Mirage of Tales universe and remains a unique experience among Pokémon GBA ROM hacks due to its narrative depth and experimental systems.

Story Overview

The game takes place in the Avlar Region, a land shaped by political power, personal ambition, and hidden mysteries. You play as an orphan who has endured significant hardship while striving to build a meaningful future. During your time at Pokémon school, your abilities catch the attention of Professor Avar, a renowned scientist researching newly discovered Pokémon species.

Shortly before graduation, Professor Avar offers you a unique opportunity: to assist in the study and observation of a mysterious new Pokémon that may change the future of Avlar. This offer marks the beginning of your journey, one that is shaped by career choices, moral decisions, and personal alliances.

Unlike traditional Pokémon games, your path forward is not dictated by gym battles. Instead, advancement is tied to licenses, reputation, and professional growth, allowing for multiple story routes and endings.
