About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Normal Version: Elemental Division is an ambitious Pokémon FireRed ROM hack designed as the first entry in a planned trilogy. The project focuses on expanding gameplay scope through multiple regions, experimental mechanics, and an evolving live-update build structure.

The hack emphasizes Normal-type Pokémon diversity, elemental interactions, and large-scale regional storytelling. While publicly playable, the project remained in a release candidate (RC) phase and was actively updated until mid-2016. No confirmed stable or final version was ever released.

Story Overview

Professor Oak announces his relocation to Brighton Town, a settlement on the western edge of the Taejo Region, bordering the undeveloped Seijo Region. This announcement sparks excitement across the region, particularly within the Quau family.

You play as Zaquar Quau, a 19-year-old beginning his Pokémon journey during Oak’s research into the versatility of Normal-type Pokémon. Oak’s studies focus on why Normal-types are capable of learning a wide variety of elemental attacks, leading him to gift Zaquar an Eevee as part of this research.

The narrative is heavily inspired by the theory of continental drift, tied to the legendary Pokémon Regigigas, which appears in a custom Sky Forme. Two major antagonistic forces—Frozen and Inferno—represent opposing ideals of planetary destruction and creation, with a third hidden force hinted throughout the story.

The adventure spans the Taejo and Seijo regions, with historical references to a lost region known as Uiyto.

Key Features

Two-Region Level Curve System

  • A custom-designed progression curve spanning two full regions, ensuring steady difficulty scaling throughout the main story and post-game. This system significantly extends overall gameplay length without relying on artificial grinding.
HM 08 – Upheaval (Regigigas Exclusive)
  • Introduces a brand-new Hidden Machine usable only by Regigigas. Upheaval is both a powerful Ground-type signature move and a world-altering ability used to unlock previously inaccessible areas.
Sky Forme Regigigas
  • A unique, fan-made alternate form of Regigigas tied directly into the story and continental drift theme, complete with its own exclusive move and visual identity.
Two Full Regions & Dual Pokémon Leagues
  • Explore the Taejo and Seijo regions, each featuring its own progression, Gym challenges, and Pokémon League. Extensive post-league content and side quests expand the adventure far beyond the credits.
Expanded Soundtrack & Song Table
  • A vastly expanded music system featuring tracks from Pokémon Emerald, Super Mario, Sonic, and reinstrumentalized MIDI tracks. Many locations feature unique music that changes depending on time of day.
Dynamic Time-Based Audio & Encounters
  • Morning, daytime, evening, late-evening, and nighttime music variations across towns, routes, and dungeons, paired with time-specific wild Pokémon encounters and events.
Periodic Graphical Overhaul System
  • Visual upgrades rolled out in structured phases (I–IV), gradually modernizing the game’s look while maintaining classic GSC-inspired aesthetics. Phase II was completed during development.
Protagonist Power-Up Abilities
  • Special Seijo-based abilities such as Dragon Fist and Ledge Jump enhance exploration and combat, giving the protagonist unique progression beyond traditional mechanics.
Major Story Antagonists
  • Encounter the creator’s counterparts—Frozen, Inferno, and a hidden third figure—each representing opposing philosophies that directly influence the world and storyline.
Taejo Police Department (TPD) – RLSS System
  • A unique in-world mechanic involving the Taejo Police Department’s Red Light Safety System, adding environmental rules and consequences in certain locations.
