About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Dreary is a completed hack, and a pretty different one. It's set in a darker version of Kanto, but the region is almost secondary — what the game is really about is atmosphere and tone.

It's short by design. The creator wasn't going for scale; they were going for impact. The goal was to build something that feels genuinely different from a standard Pokémon adventure — something that sticks with you after you put it down.

It's hard, and not just mechanically. The difficulty is tied to the mood of the whole thing. It's meant to feel oppressive, a little unsettling, and at times genuinely thought-provoking. The Physical/Special split is in, so the gameplay feels modern enough, but that's not really why you'd play this.

You'd play it for the story and the atmosphere. It doesn't try to be flashy. It just tries to leave a mark.

Story Overview

Pokémon Dreary takes place in a disturbed version of the Kanto region, where something feels off from the very beginning.

You set out on what seems like a familiar journey—traveling through Kanto, battling trainers, and aiming to reach the Indigo Plateau.

But things quickly take a darker turn.

Strange phenomena begin to occur across the region. The world feels unstable, and events don’t unfold the way they should. Characters behave differently, and the usual sense of adventure is replaced by tension and uncertainty.

As you progress, the story subtly builds toward something more sinister.

Your objective becomes clear:
reach the Indigo Plateau… while you still can.

The narrative eventually leads to a disturbing and unavoidable ending, where your choices ultimately don’t matter—you are confronted by the entity known as Dreary.

The ending was originally meant to lead into a sequel that would expand and resolve the story. However, since that sequel was cancelled, the game remains intentionally unresolved, adding to its unsettling tone.
