About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Digimon: Virus Version is a Digimon-themed Pokémon FireRed ROM hack that replaces nearly all Pokémon with Digimon while introducing a dark, original storyline inspired by Digimon Adventure, Adventure 02, and Tamers.
Unlike traditional Digimon games where the player is a hero, this hack places you in the role of an agent working for the organization Hypnos, tasked with infecting the Digital World using the D-Virus. The game emphasizes branching Digivolution paths, Digimon lore accuracy, and a morally grey narrative.
Story Overview
After the events of Digimon Adventure 02, the Digital World begins opening itself to more humans than ever before. Before the rise of a new generation of DigiDestined, a catastrophic event occurs.
The organization Hypnos, reformed after the Digimon Tamers D-Reaper incident, uses the Yugoth Program and recovered disaster data to break the barrier between the real world and the Digital World—causing both universes to collide.
Professor Nebilim, alongside Yamaki, Riley, and Tally, recruits five Special Agents to carry out a classified operation. You are one of them.
Your mission: infiltrate the Digital World and infect its Digi-Cores using the D-Virus, bringing about the total collapse of the Digital World.
Using a corrupted D-Virus Digivice, you tether Digimon, command them in battle, and force Digivolution—while iconic Digimon characters from multiple seasons stand in your way. Twists, betrayals, and unexpected turns await as your mission progresses.
Key Features
Digimon-Replacement Hack:
- Nearly all Pokémon are replaced with Digimon, including names, sprites, and Digivolution chains, transforming FireRed into a Digimon-focused experience.
- Set after Digimon Adventure 02 and Digimon Tamers, the game features a darker narrative where the player works for Hypnos as a Special Agent tasked with destroying the Digital World using the D-Virus.
- Unlike most Digimon games, you play as a villain-aligned character whose mission is to infect Digi-Cores and collapse the Digital World.
- The player uses a corrupted Digivice that tethers multiple Digimon, enables Digivolution, and serves as a core story and gameplay mechanic.
- Most Digimon have multiple Digivolution routes depending on conditions such as Dark Digivolution, Matrix Digivolution, Warp Digivolution, DNA Digivolution, and Armor Digivolution.
- Certain Digimon can Digivolve into corrupted or darker forms, such as Koromon evolving into Black Agumon through Dark Digivolution.
- Special Digivolution paths allow Digimon to transform into alternate forms like Snow Agumon through Matrix Digivolution.
- Some Digimon can skip intermediate forms and Digivolve directly into higher stages under specific conditions.
- Compatible Digimon can fuse together to create stronger Digimon, following Digimon canon fusion mechanics.
- Armor Digivolution is included, allowing Digimon to Digivolve using special items rather than levels.
- Not all Digimon Digivolve indefinitely. Some stop at Champion, while others go beyond Mega, with balance adjusted so all Digimon remain viable.
- Some Digimon are obtained by collecting Digivices found in the world, representing captured Digimon data rather than traditional Poké Ball catches.
- Items are visually and conceptually redesigned as Digimon Cards, reinforcing the Digimon aesthetic.
- Features custom sprites of characters from Digimon Adventure, Adventure 02, and Tamers.
- Mapping is partially edited, with plans for full region reworks and possibly custom tile sets.
- All Digimon sprites are custom-made or heavily edited from other Digimon games and sources, with community contributions welcomed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is Pokémon Digimon Virus Version a complete game?A: No. This project is still in development. The current patch represents an early playable segment designed to showcase Digimon replacements, Digivolutions, and story setup.
Q: How is this different from other Digimon FireRed hacks?
A: Virus Version focuses on a villain-driven narrative, placing the player as an agent working to destroy the Digital World rather than save it.
Q: Are Pokémon completely removed?
A: Almost all Pokémon are replaced with Digimon, including sprites and names. The game is designed to feel like a Digimon title rather than a Pokémon reskin.
Q: How does Digivolution work in this hack?
A: Digivolution is largely level-based but includes branching paths such as Dark, Matrix, Warp, DNA, and Armor Digivolutions.
Q: Can the same Digimon Digivolve in different ways?
A: Yes. Many Digimon have multiple Digivolution routes depending on how they are evolved and what Digivolution method is used.
Q: Do all Digimon reach Mega level?
A: No. Some Digimon stop at Champion or Ultimate, while others can go beyond Mega. Balance adjustments ensure all Digimon remain useful.
Q: What are Digi-Cores?
