About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Cyan is a FireRed-based ROM hack set in the tropical Celia Archipelago, featuring a brand-new region, updated graphics, Fakémon, and a decision-based storyline that directly impacts how the game unfolds. This project represents the developer’s second serious ROM hacking effort, focusing heavily on player choice, custom content, and narrative depth. Pokémon Cyan blends official Pokémon with high-quality Fakémon, modern mechanics, and original lore, creating a unique experience that stands apart from traditional Pokémon games.
The latest publicly released version is Beta 3 (2015), covering a substantial portion of the main story.
Story Overview
Team Rocket was once a dominant force in Kanto—until they were dismantled by a young Trainer named Red. Years later, they resurfaced in Johto, only to be defeated again by another Trainer, Gold. With their leader Giovanni gone, Team Rocket faded into legend.Or so the world believed.
Now, Giovanni has returned, resurrecting Team Rocket and launching a coordinated assault on the distant Celia Archipelago. Pokémon across the region are mysteriously disappearing, and rumors spread of secret experiments and legendary Pokémon being targeted.
On your 12th birthday, you finally begin your Pokémon journey. As you travel through Celia, you uncover Team Rocket attempting to capture Regice, one of the Legendary Regis. This moment becomes a turning point—forcing you to choose:
- Join Team Rocket and aid in their ambitions
- Oppose them, side with the Legendary Pokémon, and protect Celia
Your decisions shape the story, alliances, and the fate of the entire region.
Key Features
Brand-New Tropical Region – Celia Archipelago
- Explore the Celia Archipelago, a completely original region made up of multiple tropical islands. Each area features unique geography, towns, routes, and landmarks, offering a fresh setting distinct from Kanto, Johto, or Hoenn.
- Player choices matter in Pokémon Cyan. At key moments in the story, your decisions can influence events, character relationships, and narrative direction—most notably whether you oppose or assist Team Rocket.
- Team Rocket plays a central role in the story, with Giovanni making a full return as the main antagonist. Their plans involve Legendary Pokémon and the mysterious disappearance of Pokémon across the region.
- The game features a blend of official Pokémon alongside numerous well-designed Fakémon created specifically for Pokémon Cyan. These Fakémon include custom sprites, typings, and roles within the story.
- In addition to Generation I–III Pokémon, Pokémon Cyan includes select Pokémon from Generation 4 and Generation 5, expanding team-building options and encounter variety.
- Modern battle mechanics are implemented, separating moves into physical and special categories based on the move itself rather than its type, improving competitive balance and strategy.
- Dive and Whirlpool return as usable HMs, allowing access to underwater areas, hidden locations, and optional exploration paths throughout the Celia Archipelago.
- Optional side quests are scattered throughout the region, offering additional challenges, story moments, and rewards beyond the main Gym quest.
- Pokémon Cyan introduces new moves and abilities, enhancing combat variety and giving both official Pokémon and Fakémon more unique roles in battle.
- Berry trees are implemented across the region, allowing players to grow and harvest berries for healing items, battle preparation, and strategy.
- The hack features refreshed tilesets, improved environments, and enhanced visual presentation compared to vanilla FireRed, giving Celia a distinct look and atmosphere.
- Various ASM-based improvements are included under the hood, enabling advanced mechanics, smoother gameplay, and features not possible in standard FireRed.
