About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Crystal Shards is an ambitious Johto remake project for the Game Boy Advance, aiming to recreate Pokémon Crystal as faithfully as possible using the Pokémon Emerald engine.

Nominated for Hack of the Year 2007, the project focuses on accurate Johto maps, scripts, and progression, while benefiting from GBA improvements such as enhanced sprites, smoother animations, and expanded scripting capabilities. The hack strives to be one of the most accurate GSC-to-GBA adaptations ever attempted.

Story Overview

The storyline closely follows Pokémon Crystal’s original narrative, beginning in New Bark Town and guiding the player through Johto’s towns, routes, gyms, and story events.

Major GSC story moments—such as encounters with Silver, exploration of Sprout Tower, Ruins of Alph, and interactions with key characters like Kurt—are recreated with Emerald-based scripting. Future versions aim to expand into Goldenrod City, Ecruteak, Olivine, and eventually Kanto, mirroring Crystal’s full scope.

Key Features

  • Johto Region Recreation: Faithful recreation of Johto towns, routes, and dungeons using the Emerald engine.
