About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Ash Johto is an anime-based ROM hack that faithfully recreates Ash Ketchum’s Johto League journey from the Pokémon anime. Instead of following the traditional game storyline, players relive Ash’s adventures, battles, and events as seen in the Johto saga.
The hack focuses heavily on story accuracy, scripted events, and character-driven progression rather than open-ended gameplay. Pokémon teams, battles, and outcomes closely follow the anime canon.
Story Overview
The story follows Ash Ketchum after his journey through Kanto, as he begins a new adventure in the Johto region. Traveling alongside familiar companions, Ash challenges Johto Gym Leaders, competes in tournaments, and faces recurring rivals and Team Rocket encounters.
Major anime arcs, important battles, and memorable events from the Johto series are recreated through in-game cutscenes and scripted sequences, leading up to Ash’s participation in the Johto League.
Key Features
- Play as Ash Ketchum in the Johto Region (Anime Seasons 3, 4 & 5) – The game places you directly in Ash’s Johto journey, faithfully based on the Pokémon anime seasons covering Ash’s adventures after Kanto.
- Johto Gym Badges – All Johto Gym battles are included, following the anime-inspired progression rather than traditional game mechanics.
- No HM Requirements – You can progress through the game without needing to use HMs, allowing smoother and more story-focused gameplay.
- Johto Map Without a Town Map Item – The Johto region is fully playable, but the Town Map item is intentionally unavailable, encouraging exploration and memory-based navigation.
- Anime-Accurate Johto Experience – While not a 1:1 remake of the original Johto games, the region, routes, and events closely resemble Johto as shown in the anime.
- All Three Kanto Starters Obtained Early – You receive Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander early in the game during the Suicune-related event, mirroring Ash’s anime team.
- Ability to Catch Every Pokémon Ash Catches – Throughout the journey, you are given the opportunity to obtain all Pokémon that Ash owns in the anime.
- Anime-Based Story Events – The storyline follows major anime events and story arcs, with most episodes and situations already implemented in the game.

- Enhanced Anime Team Pokémon – Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charizard, Cyndaquil, Totodile, and Chikorita obtained through the story are stronger and more unique than versions found in the wild or used by trainers.
- Two Versions of Charizard – You start with Ash’s original Charizard, temporarily give it to Liza, and later receive a different, stronger Charizard as part of the story.
- Limited Evolution for Johto Starters – Cyndaquil and Totodile do not evolve, while Chikorita evolves only into Bayleef at level 30, but all are specially buffed to compensate.
- One-Time Chance to Catch Johto Starters’ Original Forms – You get only a single opportunity to catch the original Cyndaquil, Totodile, and Chikorita that can evolve into their final forms.
- Snorlax Reward After Fourth Gym – After earning your fourth Johto Gym Badge, you receive a level 30 Snorlax at a Pokémon Center.
- Larvitar Encounter in Mt. Silver – You can catch a level 1 Larvitar in Silver Mountain (Mt. Silver), referencing Ash’s later Johto encounters.
- Shiny Noctowl Choice Mechanic – You must choose between catching a real Shiny Noctowl or receiving a look-alike Noctowl that appears shiny but is weaker, adding a unique decision-based feature.
- Ash’s Kanto Pokémon Stored in PC – All Pokémon Ash owned during Seasons 1 and 2 are already available in your PC, allowing you to rotate and use his full anime roster.
