About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Aqua Blue is a dark, experimental, and mechanics-heavy reimagining of Kanto, set after the events of Pokémon FireRed. Rather than focusing on Pokédex completion, the game emphasizes survival, consequences, exploration, and player choice, introducing systems rarely seen in Pokémon ROM hacks.

The hack blends anime-inspired locations, hardcore gameplay mechanics, and moral decisions such as permanently losing Pokémon or joining Team Rocket.

Story Overview

The story begins in Saffron City, where you are an ordinary child awaiting your first Pokémon through an ordering service. Professor Oak plans to meet you at the Saffron City Pokémon Center—but events spiral out of control when a meteor crashes into Silph Co.

At the crash site, you encounter Team Rocket, who steal the meteor after a forced battle. Your ordered Pokémon turns out to be shiny, a result of the meteor’s mysterious energy.

After blacking out, you awaken at home, where Professor Oak reveals that the meteor fragments scattered across Kanto may hold immense scientific value. Instead of cataloguing Pokémon, your new goal is to recover meteor fragments, uncover Team Rocket’s plans, and survive a much harsher version of Kanto.

Your journey takes you across:

  • Classic Kanto locations
  • Cities inspired directly by the Pokémon anime
  • Entirely new areas built around environmental mechanics

Key Features

Starter & Pokémon Availability:
  • Choose any starter from Generations 1–3
  • Only the original 151 Pokémon, select Fakemon, MissingNo., and starters are naturally catchable
  • Other Pokémon can only be obtained via Team Rocket Balls

Battle & Difficulty Systems:
  • Forced Set Mode (cannot be changed)
  • Advanced AI with intelligent item and stat usage
  • Massive difficulty increase
  • Gym Leaders scale dynamically:

    • Player’s highest level +3
    • Player’s team size +1
  • Critical hit nerf
  • Inverse battles
  • Legendary battles redesigned to feel truly legendary

Legendary Battle System (Expanded):

Legendary encounters consist of multiple chained battles against increasingly powerful versions of the same Pokémon.

  • “Powered-Up” Legendaries:

    • Perfect movesets
    • Boosted stats across all fields
    • Cannot be captured
  • Once weakened, the final battle allows capture
  • Special traits called “Strong Will” may apply:

    • Only faintable via status damage
    • Constant healing
    • Forced self-damage through confusion
    • Party-wide status effects at battle start
    • Preparation is mandatory—these fights are meant to test mastery, not luck.

Death System:

Pokémon fainting carries real consequences:

  • 1 in 5 chance that a Pokémon permanently dies when fainting
  • Revives cannot be used in battle
  • Dead Pokémon become a special “Ghost” species:

    • HP set to 0/0
    • Items can still be removed
  • Planned event to send fallen Pokémon to Lavender Tower instead of releasing them

This system reinforces emotional attachment and strategic caution.

Loot & Crafting System:

Wild Pokémon drop loot only when fainted, not captured.

Core Drop System

  • Basic Pokémon (with evolution):

    • 2/3 Ruined Core
    • 1/3 Common Core
  • First Evolutions / No-Evolution Pokémon:

    • Ruined / Common / Rare Core (equal chance)
  • Final Evolutions:

    • Ruined / Rare / Epic Core (equal chance)
  • Uses for Cores
    • Selling for money
    • Crafting Legendary Held Items
    • Unlocking Special Machines (custom moves)

This system encourages battling wild Pokémon rather than avoiding encounters.

Zonewide Gameplay Mechanics:

Certain areas apply global effects to your party.

Example – Gringey City:

  • Polluted ground poisons your entire team upon entry
  • Only solution: carry a Poison-type Pokémon to absorb toxins

This design gives Pokémon practical world utility, replacing HM dependency with organic mechanics.

Team Rocket Path:

You can join Team Rocket permanently.

Benefits:

  • Access to Rocket-exclusive shops
  • Early access to powerful stat items (XX / XXX items)
  • Entry into Rocket buildings without resistance
  • Rocket Balls (capture opponent’s Pokémon)

Drawbacks:

  • Team Rocket takes a percentage of your battle earnings
  • You remain consistently low on money
  • Morally and mechanically impactful decision

Unique Items & Systems:
  • Pokemon Loot Drops
  • Item Crafting
  • Cardboard Box – sneak past trainers
  • Rocket Balls – steal Pokémon
  • XX / XXX Items – massive stat boosts (used by trainers too)
  • IV Viewer in Status Screen
  • Single-use IV Modifier
  • Shiny Stones – turn Pokémon shiny
  • Name Change Contracts (even traded Pokémon)
  • XP gained from capturing Pokémon
