About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Kanto Convergence is a FireRed decompilation hack built around a single idea: what if the Kanto region was filled with regional variants instead of entirely new Pokémon? Rather than expanding the Pokédex with species from later generations, the hack stays faithful to the original Generation I identity by focusing exclusively on Kanto Pokémon and their regional forms.
Throughout the adventure, familiar Pokémon can now be encountered as Alolan, Galarian, Hisuian, and Paldean variants, while their modern evolutions are also available. Wild encounters, NPC trades, and evolution methods have all been redesigned so these regional forms fit naturally into Kanto's environments. For example, icy areas such as the Seafoam Islands are home to Alolan species, while locations like the Power Plant feature Pokémon that match their regional counterparts thematically.
Although the storyline closely follows the original FireRed adventure, nearly every trainer has been rebuilt to include at least one Kanto regional variant, giving battles a fresh feel without abandoning the classic Kanto experience. The project also introduces numerous modern quality-of-life improvements, streamlined evolution methods, expanded TM availability, and additional post-game content.
The developer notes that this is their first ROM hack, so while the game is fully playable, there may be occasional minor graphical or text issues. Players are encouraged to save regularly as a precaution.
Key Features
- Kanto Regional Variant Focus: The entire hack is built around Kanto Pokémon appearing in their Alolan, Galarian, Hisuian, and Paldean forms.
- Generation I Identity Preserved: No unrelated later-generation species are included. Only Kanto Pokémon and their regional forms or evolutions are available, maintaining the original Kanto atmosphere.
- Regional Wild Encounters: Regional forms appear in carefully chosen locations that fit their lore, such as Alolan Pokémon in the Seafoam Islands and Hisuian Voltorb inside the Power Plant.
- Regional NPC Trades: Certain regional forms can also be obtained through in-game trades.
- Modern Evolutions: Pokémon such as Magmar, Rhydon, and other Kanto species can evolve into their later-generation evolutions.
- Regional Evolution Zones: Special environmental locations trigger regional evolutions, allowing Pokémon such as Exeggcute, Pikachu, Cubone, and Koffing to evolve into their regional counterparts through location-based mechanics.
- Simplified Trade Evolutions: Pokémon that normally require trading now evolve automatically through level progression or by leveling up while holding the appropriate evolution item.
- Level 36 Evolution System: Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, Haunter, Alolan Graveler, and similar Pokémon evolve automatically upon reaching Level 36.
- Held Item Evolutions: Trade evolutions that require held items now evolve by leveling up while holding the required item.
- Trainer Team Overhaul: Every trainer has been redesigned to feature at least one Kanto regional variant, while later updates further adjusted trainer themes to better match their classes and Gym specialties.
- HGSS-Style Pokédex: Features an updated Pokédex interface inspired by HeartGold and SoulSilver.
- Modern Quality of Life Options: EXP Share, Auto Run, and Auto Repel can all be toggled directly through the Options menu.
- Reusable TMs: Every TM can be used infinitely after being obtained.
- Expanded TM Selection: Version 1.01 adds fifty additional TMs placed throughout the overworld, Celadon Department Store, the Game Corner, and other locations.
- Free Move Relearner: Pokémon Centers include a PC-based Move Learner capable of teaching forgotten moves, Egg Moves, and Move Tutor moves free of charge.
- HM Improvements: HM moves can now be forgotten without restrictions.
- Legendary Event Restoration: Event tickets are earned naturally by repeatedly defeating the Elite Four, unlocking encounters with Deoxys, Lugia, Ho-Oh, and Mew.
- Champion Ribbon Progression System: Additional legendary tickets require the player's party to contain at least one Pokémon that has not yet earned the Champion Ribbon, encouraging the use of different teams.
- Gym Leader Rematches: Powerful post-game Gym Leader rematches unlock after completing the Elite Four rematch and the Sevii Islands.
- Unlimited Gym Rematches: Once defeated for the first time, Gym Leaders can be challenged repeatedly.
- Giovanni Post-Game Battle: A new post-game storyline culminates in an especially difficult rematch against Giovanni centered around Mewtwo.
- High-Level Endgame Battles: Elite Four rematches and Gym Leader rematches feature full teams of six Pokémon, often reaching levels above 80.
- Generation VIII Battle Features: Built using the pokefirered-expansion, bringing modern mechanics such as the Fairy type and the Physical/Special split.
Known Bugs & Issues
The developer notes that this is their first ROM hack, so players may encounter minor text issues, graphical glitches, or small bugs during normal gameplay. These are not expected to significantly affect playability, but saving frequently is recommended.
Version 1.02 fixes a bug where Mewtwo could incorrectly appear during Giovanni's first battle. Earlier versions also included trainer roster adjustments, additional TMs, reusable TMs, HM improvements, and various text fixes. A previous freezing issue involving Bug Catchers in Viridian Forest appears to have been resolved, although the developer cannot guarantee it has been completely eliminated.

Defeat the Elite Four repeatedly to unlock post-game islands. Each Hall of Fame clear awards the next item in sequence:

Critical Rule: To receive the ticket upon entering the Hall of Fame, your party must contain at least one Pokémon without the Champion Ribbon. If all six party members already have the ribbon, the reward event will not trigger. Rotate in a new team member for each run!
