About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Low Budget Crystal is a large overhaul of Pokémon Crystal created primarily as an experimental and technical project to explore advanced Game Boy Color ROM hacking. Despite the self-deprecating title, the hack introduces a wide range of modern mechanics and major gameplay changes.

The game dramatically expands the Pokédex and gameplay systems while keeping the original Johto experience as a base. Over 500 Pokémon are available, including many species from later generations, alternate forms, beta Pokémon, and even a few custom additions.

The hack also focuses heavily on improving gameplay flow. Systems such as dynamic level scaling, improved EXP mechanics, and the removal of trade evolutions help make the game more accessible while still maintaining challenge.

Another major design goal is increasing freedom. Many of the original game's progression blockers have been removed, allowing players to explore the world in a much more open order. Gym leaders scale with badge progress, and different team compositions appear depending on when you challenge them.

Story Overview

The story follows the familiar journey through the Johto region, similar to the original Pokémon Crystal. Players begin their adventure as a new Pokémon trainer exploring Johto, collecting Gym Badges, and working toward the Pokémon League. Additional overworld encounters and boss Pokémon events also add new challenges throughout the world.

Key Features

  • Open-World Progression: Many story blockers from the original game have been removed, allowing players to explore much of the world freely and challenge gyms in different orders.
  • Dynamic Level Scaling System: Trainers and gym leaders scale their levels based on the player’s badge count, ensuring the game remains challenging regardless of progression order.
  • Massive Pokédex Expansion: The game includes roughly 500 Pokémon, primarily from Generations 1–3, along with beta Pokémon, alternate forms, and a few experimental additions.
  • Mega Evolution System: Mega Evolutions are implemented in the game, giving certain Pokémon powerful temporary transformations during battle.
  • Physical/Special Split: Moves are divided into physical or special categories based on the move itself rather than the type, modernizing the battle mechanics.
  • Fairy Type Implementation: The Fairy type has been added to rebalance the type chart and improve Pokémon diversity.
  • Overworld Pokémon Encounters: Some Pokémon appear directly in the overworld and can be interacted with, including special boss encounters with increased stats.
  • Dynamic Gym Leader Teams: Gym leaders use different Pokémon depending on how many badges you have, preventing predictable battles.
  • Multiple Starter Origins: Players can choose different starting backgrounds, which affect available starter Pokémon.
  • HM Quality-of-Life System: HMs can be used in the overworld without needing to permanently teach the move to a Pokémon.
  • Running Shoes: Running is available to improve exploration speed.
  • Reusable TMs: TMs can be used multiple times instead of being single-use.
  • Trade Evolution Replacements: Pokémon that normally require trading now evolve through alternate methods.
  • Revamped Moves and Stats: Many Pokémon stats and moves have been rebalanced to improve viability and gameplay diversity.
  • Frostbite Status Effect: The original Freeze condition has been replaced with the Frostbite mechanic inspired by Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
  • Reduced Encounter Rates: Wild encounters occur less frequently, making exploration smoother and less frustrating.
  • Rematchable Gym Leaders: Gym leaders can be challenged again for additional battles and training.
  • Modified EXP System: Experience gain has been adjusted to significantly reduce grinding.
  • Hoenn Region Expansion: A partially completed Hoenn region is currently being added, with progress reaching around the sixth gym.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Some systems such as expanded boss Pokémon health bars and the Hoenn region are still being actively developed and may not be fully polished. The developer has also requested help with bug testing Mega Evolutions, Hoenn content, and overall game balance.
  • Players should expect occasional glitches or unfinished areas while development continues.
