About This ROM Hack
Pokemon Emerental is one of the more unusual modern Emerald ROM hacks released in recent years. Developed by Sadfish, the project takes the familiar Hoenn structure from Pokémon Emerald and completely reshapes how progression, battling, and team building work. Instead of trying to be a traditional enhancement hack or a full story replacement, Emerental leans heavily into experimental gameplay mechanics while still keeping the core Emerald adventure recognizable.
The biggest gimmick is simple but radically changes the way battles feel: every Pokémon only has access to four moves total. Once that Pokémon evolves, it gains access to another set of four moves. This creates a very different kind of strategy compared to normal Pokémon games, because move management, timing evolutions, and choosing team members become far more important than simply stacking coverage moves.
The game also includes a curated Pokédex featuring over 200 Pokémon from multiple generations, alongside numerous custom resprites, redesigns, and even a few Fakemon-style reinterpretations. A large portion of the roster was visually reworked by various community sprite artists, giving the hack a distinctive visual identity while still feeling grounded in the GBA aesthetic.
Mechanically, the hack strips away a lot of competitive grinding. EVs, IVs, and Natures no longer affect stats, meaning players can focus entirely on strategy and team composition instead of optimization. Experience Share is permanently enabled, configurable level caps are included, and HM usage has been heavily streamlined to reduce unnecessary friction.
The project was reportedly created in a relatively short amount of time, and the developer openly mentions that some rough edges remain. Certain leftover systems from vanilla Emerald still exist despite no longer serving much purpose, and the post-game is not fully overhauled outside of a few changes. Even with those limitations, Emerental stands out because of how confidently it commits to its core gameplay idea instead of trying to imitate every other modern Emerald difficulty hack.
Key Features
- Four-Move Pokémon System: Every Pokémon only has access to four moves total. Upon evolution, they gain access to another set of four moves. This completely changes long-term strategy and team planning.
- Level-Scaling Move Power: Moves scale as Pokémon level up. For example, a low-level Hammer Arm may start weaker early on and gradually increase to its intended full power later in the game.
- Curated 200+ Pokémon Dex: The game includes a custom roster of Pokémon pulled from multiple generations instead of using the standard Emerald Pokédex.
- Custom Resprites and Redesigns: Around half of the included Pokémon feature custom sprites, redesigns, or altered appearances, giving the hack a unique visual style.
- Fakemon-Style Additions: Some Pokémon were redesigned heavily enough to feel like entirely new species while still fitting the overall aesthetic.
- No EV, IV, or Nature Grinding: Natures, EVs, and IVs no longer affect stats, removing the need for stat optimization and focusing gameplay more on strategy.
- Permanent Exp. Share: Experience Share functionality is enabled by default and cannot be disabled, helping team progression feel smoother.
- Configurable Level Caps: Players can adjust level cap settings using an item found in the player’s PC.
- Reworked Rewards: Gym Leaders no longer reward TMs. Instead, they give special held items that were normally unavailable in Generation III.
- Altered NPC Rewards: Several NPC rewards throughout Hoenn were changed, including the Trick House rewards, fishing rod progression, and other item distributions.
- Modern HM Improvements: HMs and Secret Power no longer require being taught to Pokémon. Players only need the corresponding TM or HM in their bag. Fly additionally requires a Flying-type Pokémon in the party.
- Exp. Candy System: Lilycove City’s Vitamin Shop now sells special Exp. Candies that raise Pokémon directly to the previous level cap.
- Custom Type Chart: The game includes a fully reworked type chart available through the download documentation.
- Gameplay-First Design Philosophy: Emerental prioritizes fast pacing, experimentation, and battle variety over traditional Pokémon grinding systems.
- added heavy duty boots as a reward in the trick house so countering toxic spikes is a bit easier lol
- slightly updated ariados sprite
- lowered tate/liza's levels
- buffed revenge and clones
- All bosses use less healing items
Known Bugs & Issues
- The developer openly states that the hack was created in a relatively short time, so some unfinished or awkward elements still remain.
- Some TMs still exist in the game world even though they are no longer teachable. The post-game is also mostly unchanged from vanilla Emerald aside from certain specific battles like Steven. Additional undocumented quirks or balancing oddities may appear during playthroughs.
- There is currently limited public information regarding long-term emulator compatibility or potential edge-case bugs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What makes Pokemon Emerental different from other Emerald ROM hacks?
A: The biggest difference is the four-move system. Every Pokémon only learns a very limited set of moves, which completely changes how you build teams and approach battles.
Q: Does Pokemon Emerental add a new region or storyline?
A: No. The game mainly follows the original Hoenn story from Pokémon Emerald, but the gameplay systems and balance are heavily modified.
Q: Is Pokemon Emerental a difficulty hack?
A: Yes, but it focuses more on strategic restrictions and creative mechanics rather than purely unfair enemy levels or brutal AI.
Q: Are there Fakemon in Pokemon Emerental?
A: There are some redesigns and heavily altered Pokémon sprites that feel similar to Fakemon, though the game mainly uses existing Pokémon species.
Q: Can every Pokémon still learn lots of moves?
A: No. Each Pokémon is intentionally restricted to a very small move pool, which is the core gameplay gimmick of the hack.
Q: Does the game remove EV and IV grinding?
A: Yes. EVs, IVs, and Natures no longer impact stats, allowing players to focus purely on strategy and team synergy.
Q: Who is this ROM hack for?
A: This hack is best suited for players who already know Emerald well and want a fresh mechanical twist instead of a traditional enhancement hack or story-focused experience.
Q: Does Pokemon Emerental include quality-of-life improvements?
A: Yes. Features like automatic Exp. Share, HM streamlining, configurable level caps, and altered progression rewards help make the experience smoother.
Q: Is the post-game fully completed?
A: Not entirely. The developer mentions that much of the post-game remains close to vanilla Emerald with only partial changes.
