About This ROM Hack
Kanto Expansion Pak is a large-scale expansion of Pokémon Red that transforms the Gen 1 experience into something closer to an alternate-history version of Pokémon, where later-generation ideas, prototype content, regional forms, and modern quality-of-life systems exist inside the classic Game Boy engine.
The project significantly expands the Pokédex with over 100 additional Pokémon connected to Kanto — including post-Gen 1 evolutions, prototype Spaceworld 1997 creatures, regional variants, convergent evolutions, Paradox relatives, and even Meltan and Melmetal. Alongside this, the hack introduces new areas, music, items, mechanics, and post-game content while intentionally preserving certain iconic Gen 1 battle quirks to maintain the original feel.
It’s not just a difficulty tweak or minor enhancement — this is a content expansion pack for Kanto in the most literal sense.
Story Overview
The core story still follows the classic Kanto journey: collecting Gym Badges, dismantling Team Rocket, and challenging the Elite Four and Champion. However, the world itself is larger and richer, with new locations, post-game content, expanded lore elements, and additional legendary encounters.
New areas add worldbuilding and late-game exploration, giving returning players fresh reasons to revisit Kanto beyond the original route structure. The overall narrative remains faithful to Gen 1, but the scope of the adventure is greatly expanded, especially after becoming Champion.
Key Features
- New Pokémon Expansion: Over 100 additional Pokémon are added, including post-Gen 1 evolutions like Kingdra and Rhyperior, Spaceworld 1997 prototype Pokémon such as Gorochu and Kotora, regional variants, convergent evolutions, Paradox relatives, and Meltan/Melmetal.
- New Type Integration: Dark, Steel, and Fairy types exist for the new Pokémon, while some original Pokémon retain their Gen 1 typings. The Dark and Steel type chart follows the Spaceworld 1997 demo, creating a unique balance environment.
- New Moves: Select new moves are introduced for the added types, along with two moves from Red & Green prototype builds.
- New Items: New evolution items, Bottle Caps, a new fossil, and other items expand progression and team-building options.
- New Locations: Multiple new areas are added, some for worldbuilding and others for gameplay content, especially post-Champion.
- Music Expansion: Several new music tracks are added for important battles and areas, including legendary encounters and Team Rocket themes, with custom compositions.
- Map Improvements: Some original areas are visually enhanced, expanded, or made easier to navigate.
- Massive QoL Enhancements: Includes a female player option, removal of version exclusivity, increased item storage, additional PC boxes, improved Exp. All, Gym Leader and Elite Four rematches, and many usability improvements.
- Bug Fixes with Gen 1 Preservation: Many overworld and AI issues are fixed, while iconic Gen 1 battle bugs (like Focus Energy behavior) are intentionally preserved for authenticity.
Known Bugs & Issues
- No major game-breaking issues are stated. However, inaccurate emulators can cause unintended glitches. The hack is confirmed to work properly on accurate emulators and official hardware. Some Gen 1 battle quirks are intentionally preserved and are not considered bugs within this project’s design philosophy.
