About This ROM Hack
Pokémon – The Unown King is a myth-themed Pokémon Emerald decomp ROM hack developed as a contender for Team Aqua’s ROM-Hacking Competition 2, which required all entries to follow a mythological theme.Built using pokeemerald-expansion, the hack focuses on lore-heavy storytelling, puzzle-driven exploration, and unconventional gameplay mechanics. Rather than following a traditional Gym-based journey, the experience revolves around uncovering ancient secrets tied to the Unown species and a mysterious godlike entity known as the Unown King.
The project blends experimental design, narrative depth, and high challenge, offering a compact but memorable adventure.
Story Overview
According to legend, after creating time, space, and the universe itself, Arceus created Mew to populate existence. Mew could divide itself endlessly, but Arceus sought greater diversity. To achieve this, Arceus created the Unown, whose mysterious psychic waves reshaped Mew into countless new lifeforms. However, these waves needed coordination to preserve balance, so Arceus created a guiding entity: the Unown King.
For unknown reasons, the Unown King was sealed away inside the Temple of the Unown King, and its story was never completed… or so it was believed.
Ancient inscriptions scattered throughout the temple allegedly tell the rest of the tale, but no one has ever been able to read them. Only by gathering Unown—found both inside and beyond the temple—can the truth be deciphered.
Your journey is to uncover this forgotten myth, battle powerful guardians, and learn what truly happened to the Unown King.
