About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Fire Red Reignited & Leaf Green Regrown is a comprehensive overhaul of the classic Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen experience. Built using a decompiled FireRed base and extensive engine upgrades (such as CFRU and Dynamic Pokémon Expansion), this hack aims to retain the nostalgic essence of the original games while addressing perceived weaknesses in the base titles. Its systems draw inspiration from Legacy and Emerald Legacy-style projects but stand on their own with unique map changes, battle enhancements, difficulty modes, and quality-of-life improvements.

Rather than being a simple cosmetic update, it rethinks almost every system: evolutions, trainer balance, encounter locations, mechanics implementations, and postgame content.

Story Overview

The classic Kanto and Sevii Islands journey is preserved but expanded into a richer narrative and gameplay structure. The player starts in Kanto, challenges the Gym Leaders, defeats Team Rocket, and takes on the Elite Four. However, the world feels fuller and more dynamic with new character interactions, enhanced world scripting, and expanded postgame content that includes:

  • A Sevii Island League with boss trainers and rewards
  • Fully customizable game difficulty modes
  • Multiple Johto-associated encounters and trainers

The story’s heart remains a classic Pokémon adventure — becoming Champion and completing the Pokédex — but it is framed with deep gameplay changes and richer world immersion.

Key Features

  • Trade Evolution Rework: Trade Pokémon now evolve via level-up or their evolution item, removing link trade requirements.
  • Expanded Regional Pokédex: All Kanto and Johto Pokémon are obtainable in both versions, strengthening type diversity and regional connection.
  • Rebalanced Main Dex Structure: The main game Pokédex contains 181 Pokémon, consisting of 151 originals and 30 additional species, where two-thirds are evolutions or pre-evolutions and one-third are Johto additions.
  • Map Overhaul: Areas such as Cinnabar Island and Mt. Moon have been redesigned to feel less empty and more visually engaging.
  • New Area Expansions: Mt. Moon Square and a new Rock Tunnel floor have been added, both accessible via Rock Smash.
  • Encounter and Stat Rebalancing: Wild locations, base stats, abilities, and movesets have been improved, including Bug-type Cut and stronger movesets for weaker Pokémon; Nidoran lines return to Route 22 and many encounters mirror Yellow Legacy design.
  • Battle Engine Enhancements: Numerous engine and stat adjustments are ported from Emerald Legacy, including mechanics like a 50% Defense boost during hail.
  • Type System Adjustment: Dark and Ghost types have been swapped to improve balance and identity.
  • Trainer Battle Improvements: Trainers feature better curves, evolved Pokémon, optimized movesets, cross-gen evolutions, and Giovanni now uses a Rhydon; Champion level cap is 65.
  • Gift Pokémon Scaling: Gift Pokémon are received at higher, more relevant levels.
  • Legacy Feature Integration: Includes features inspired by Emerald and Yellow Legacy such as improved fossil acquisition, fishing rod placement, and Oak battles.
  • Difficulty Modes: Normal follows classic rules, Hard introduces level caps and no battle items with Set mode, and Hardcore adds permadeath mechanics.
  • Sevii Postgame Expansion: The Sevii Islands feature significantly more content, battles, and structured endgame progression.
  • Sevii League Challenge: A boss-trainer gauntlet in Sevii rewards players with the Aurora Ticket.
  • Gym Leader Rematches: Leaders can be challenged again for tougher battles.
  • Roamer System Rework: Beating the Elite Four spawns additional roamers if the current one is caught; roamers no longer flee with Roar, have good IVs, and an NPC on Five Island helps register them in the Pokédex.
  • Reward and Item Improvements: NPC rewards have been upgraded, including Lucky Egg from the Facade Onix NPC and Master Ball chances from Selphy.
  • VS Seeker Upgrade: Postgame VS Seeker requires only one-fifth of the original steps and detects all trainers in range.
  • National Dex Requirement Removed: The 60 Pokémon requirement to unlock the National Dex has been eliminated.
  • Eggtutor Feature: An Egg Move tutor becomes available after defeating a certain trainer group.
  • Johto Trainer Battles: Specific Johto trainers can be battled.
  • Pokédex Completion Quest: Catching all 180 Pokémon leads to an event with Professor Oak.
  • Celebi Treasure Hunt: A postgame questline centered on finding Celebi.
  • HM System Overhaul: Cut trees and smashable rocks permanently disappear after use; HMs are replaceable and Victory Road boulders remain moved.
  • Rock Smash Expansion: Rock Smash replaces the Everstone aid and opens new optional paths such as Route 4 shortcuts to Mt. Moon; usable after Surge.
  • TM Placement Improvements: Strong TMs like Hidden Power, Sludge Bomb, Facade, Ice Beam in Seafoam, Thunderbolt in Power Plant, and Flamethrower on Mt. Ember have new locations.
  • Optional Rock Smash Areas: New side areas are accessible using Rock Smash.
  • Waterfall Requirement Removal: Waterfall is no longer required on Four Island and functions as a trophy-style mechanic; Dive is added as a Safari Zone trophy feature.
  • Faster Healing: Nurse Joy interactions are sped up.
  • Bag Organization: Built-in bag sorting system.
  • Stat Checkers: EV and IV checkers are available on the second floor of Pokémon Centers.
  • EXP Share Relocation: EXP Share replaces the Running Shoes slot, while Running Shoes are obtained early at Oak’s Lab.
  • Repel Reuse: Repels can be reused automatically.
  • Economy Adjustments: Item pricing has been rebalanced.
  • Team Rocket Music: Team Rocket battles use music from Crystal Dust.
  • Truck Access Change: The truck area can be accessed without trading through a specific Pokémon learning Cut naturally.
  • Progression Blockers: Certain NPCs block trees until the SS Anne rival battle; Misty and Blue unlock the Dig House; a strong guard must be defeated after Vermilion to open gates.
  • Emerald Feature Ports: Includes out-of-battle ability effects, Premier Balls, and EV-reducing berries.
  • Shop Improvements: Shops, including the Two Island merchant, have upgraded inventories.
  • Item Respawn System: Respawnable items reappear after 1000 steps.
  • Tutor and TM Shop Changes: Move Tutor relocated to Cinnabar, mushrooms sold on Three Island, and postgame TM seller on Two Island.
  • Trainer Tower Upgrade: Singles and Doubles modes include more Pokémon with improved sets and rewards.
  • Overworld Sprite Variety: More trainer overworld sprites added.
  • Victory Road Trainer Additions: Unused trainers have been restored.
  • Battle Animation Toggle Events: Champion and Oak enable battle animations similar to RBY behavior.
  • Safari Zone Mechanics: Rock, bait, and ball mechanics have been improved.
  • Move Relearning: Tutor moves can be relearned for a cost.

A: Yes, all Johto and Kanto Pokémon are available in both versions, with new dex distributions and pre-evolutions where appropriate.

Q: What difficulty modes are available?
A: Normal, Hard (level caps, no items, Set battle), and Hardcore (permadeath) provide tailored experiences.

Q: Is there post-game content?
A: Yes — extended Sevii Islands content, a Sevii League, roaming capture improvements, and special quests like Celebi hunts.

Q: Are HMs required?
A: HMs have been reimagined; some are optional, and key moves are accessible without traditional progression blockers.

Q: Who is this hack for?
A: This hack is for players who love classic Pokémon but want a more balanced, story-rich, modernized GBA experience with enhanced mechanics, refined balance, and deeper post-game content.
