About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Collapse is a compact Pokémon Emerald ROM hack created by duckboy2001 for the Team Aqua ROM Hacking Competition, designed to deliver a short but complete Pokémon-style experience in a new regional setting. Unlike large-scale ROM hacks that span multiple regions or extended story arcs, this project focuses on a tight, self-contained adventure centered around a limited area and a small set of objectives.

The hack preserves the feel of classic Pokémon gameplay while introducing new locations, characters, and gym leaders, offering a familiar structure presented in a more condensed format. The result is a quick, focused experience that can be completed in a short session, making it stand out as a “mini-hack” rather than a full-scale RPG overhaul.

Despite its shorter length, the hack still aims to provide a complete Pokémon-style journey with progression, battles, and exploration, just in a significantly reduced scope.

Story Overview

You start your adventure in the new settlement of Seaspray Town, encountering unique characters, gym challenges, and a storyline that branches away from standard Hoenn progression. The narrative is more concise and focused, with the player’s journey revolving around key regional tasks and battle against distinctive gym leader.

Key Features

  • Brand New Storyline: Original narrative designed around Seaspray Town and its surroundings.
  • New Starter Pokémon Options: Begin your journey with Marshtomp, Bayleef, and Monferno.
  • Original Characters: New NPCs, gym leaders, and trainers that you’ll encounter throughout your adventure.
  • Gym Challenges: Unique gym leaders distinct from the base Emerald experience.
  • Familiar Mechanics: Core Pokémon mechanics, battles, and progression remain close to Emerald’s base design, offering a balance between new and classic gameplay.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Available documentation does mention at least one specific technical bug: if you nickname your starter Pokémon, the game may black-screen when entering a PokéMart — a known visual glitch that can be avoided by setting your save type to 128 K.
