About This ROM Hack
Pokémon TCG Generations is a comprehensive ROM hack of the original Pokémon Trading Card Game for Game Boy Color. The hack replaces nearly every Pokémon card in the game with Pokémon spanning Generations 1 through 9, while maintaining the original TCG gameplay structure.
All Pokémon cards feature new attacks, resistances, Poké-Powers, and reworked effects. Sprites are directly inspired by official Pokémon TCG artwork, meaning many cards will feel immediately recognizable to longtime TCG fans.
This project focuses heavily on balance and replayability, modernizing the original game’s mechanics while preserving its identity.
Special Versions Included
This release includes three distinct versions of the game:
- Pokémon TCG Generations (Standard): The default and intended experience.
- Pokémon TCG Generations LC (Little Cup): Only Common cards appear in booster packs, offering a unique challenge mode.
- Pokémon TCG Generations One for One: You may only use one copy of each card, similar to a Gym Leader Challenge rule set.
Key Features
- Expanded Card Pool: The game includes 310 total cards, which is 82 more cards than the original game.
- Multiple Playable Characters: At the start of the game, you can choose to play as Mark or Mint, just like in the sequel.
- Starter Deck Variety: You can begin with 7 different starter decks instead of the original 3.
- Generational Pokémon Replacement: Almost all Pokémon cards have been replaced with Pokémon from later generations, with a few intentional exceptions (such as Eevee, Ditto, and Horsea) due to unique card mechanics or evolution requirements.
Rebalanced Meta:
The game has been carefully balanced so that:
- Basic Pokémon are generally weaker than in the original
- Greater emphasis is placed on Stage 1 and Stage 2 Pokémon
- Every card has a meaningful role or strategic niche
Custom Sprite Overhaul:
- All Pokémon sprites were remade by the developer
- Sprites follow the original TCG art style
- Supports up to 3 palettes per sprite, matching Pokémon TCG 2
Attack & Effect Reworks:
- Most attacks have been modified or fully redesigned
- New attacks and effects have been added
- Poké-Powers have been adjusted for balance
Booster Pack Improvements:
- Each booster pack now contains 11 cards
- Almost every card is obtainable through 4 main booster packs
- You can clearly see which booster contains each card
- Original card artist and set information is displayed
Trainer & NPC Enhancements:
- Main Duelist sprites replaced with Pokémon TCG 2 versions
- Club Masters now reward an extra booster pack (3 total)
Known Bugs & Issues
- Some bugs from the original game remain (such as Acid not working correctly or Pokémon Trader misuse).
- A visual glitch may cause the cursor to disappear in the middle of the Deck Builder screen.
- During duels, the cursor may appear visually inverted when checking the opponent’s cards.
- These are visual-only issues and do not affect gameplay.
