About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Sister Version is a small-scale Generation I ROM hack that focuses on narrative perspective and character presentation rather than gameplay changes. Built on Pokémon Blue, the hack reimagines the classic Kanto journey by replacing the male protagonist and rival with female counterparts while keeping the original mechanics, balance, and progression intact.

The goal of the project is to explore how the original Gen 1 experience might feel from a different perspective, while still remaining faithful to the tone, limitations, and style of early Pokémon games. Rather than introducing new systems or difficulty changes, the hack makes subtle but meaningful adjustments to character roles, dialogue, and presentation.

This results in a version of Pokémon Blue that feels both authentic and slightly reinterpreted, offering a fresh lens on a familiar adventure without disrupting its core identity.

Key Features

  • Female Protagonist Sprite: The player character sprite has been replaced with a female counterpart while maintaining the original Gen 1 visual style.
  • Female Rival Character: The traditional male rival is replaced with a female rival who fills a modified narrative role.
  • Dialogue Adjustments: NPC dialogue has been lightly edited to acknowledge the player as female, including intentional period-accurate remarks reflecting Gen 1 worldbuilding.
  • Rival Role Swap: Green (male) and Daisy swap roles, resulting in a kinder rival personality with a narrative twist.
  • Fixed Rival Starter Choice: The rival always uses Clefairy as her starter Pokémon, while the player retains access to the original three starters.
  • Alternate Family Setup: Red appears as the player’s younger brother at home instead of the original mother NPC.
  • Modified Music Tracks: The opening theme uses a different duty cycle, and the rival battle theme is replaced with a Pokémon Lullaby–inspired track from GSC.
  • Faithful Gameplay: All core mechanics, battles, encounters, and progression remain identical to Pokémon Blue.
