About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Retyped Red is a full-scale ROM hack of Pokémon Red and Blue, developed from the PokeRed disassembly. Its main goal is to reimagine the original game as a slightly less imbalanced, speed-focused adventure, while retaining the quirks and glitches of Gen 1. The hack significantly updates Pokémon typings, movesets, base stats, and trainer teams, making the game more challenging and unpredictable while keeping the core gameplay nostalgic.
The hack is designed to challenge players by rethinking almost every mechanical aspect of Pokémon Red/Blue. It introduces three new types (Steel, Dark, Fairy), adds over 40 new moves including modern attacks like Play Rough and Psystrike, and updates the effectiveness chart, making battles more strategic.
Pokémon are retyped, with many classic species receiving dual typings or entirely new types. Base stats for nearly all Pokémon have been adjusted, sometimes dramatically, to balance their new roles. Trainer rosters—including gym leaders and the Elite Four—have been redesigned for greater difficulty. Items, TMs, and trade evolutions are reworked for consistency, and quality-of-life improvements such as gender selection and a move relearner are included.
While preserving the original quirks of Gen 1, Retyped Red modernizes the type system and competitive depth while keeping a nostalgic feel.
Key Features
- Type Overhaul: Pokémon typings have been completely redesigned. Notable changes include Charizard becoming Fire/Dragon, Gyarados Water/Dragon, and new dual typings like Bug/Fairy and Poison/Fairy.
- New Types & Mechanics: Steel, Dark, and Fairy are fully implemented, along with a special Physical Psychic type for Mewtwo. Type matchups are reworked for modern balance.
- Stat Rebalance: Base stats for nearly all Pokémon have been updated, in many cases substantially, to better reflect their new roles and typings.
- Updated Movesets: 44+ new moves are included, from modern mainline Pokémon games, such as Play Rough, Moonblast, Psystrike, and Draining Kiss. Existing moves have also been reworked for power and functionality.
- Gym & Elite Four Team Reworks: Gym leaders and Elite Four members now have modernized teams and movesets, increasing challenge and strategic depth.
- TM and Item Changes: TM learnsets adjusted, most TMs are available for purchase, and rare items and Pokémon prizes updated for better progression.
- Quality-of-Life Enhancements: Gender selection added, move relearner included, Old Rod and Bike start in the PC, and starter Pokémon adjusted to modern typings and stats.
- Postgame Content: Includes a postgame Professor Oak battle with high-level, diverse Pokémon teams.
- Classic Gen 1 Mechanics Retained: Original quirks like critical hit calculation, status immunities, damage mechanics, and glitches are preserved to maintain nostalgic gameplay.
Known Bugs & Issues
- One known intentional “bug” remains: Dire Hit and Focus Energy only provide a quarter critical hit increase, reflecting the hack’s design philosophy.
- Freeze status is indefinite (not fixed).
- Some in-game entities may spawn or pathfind into impossible places; this is not planned to be fixed.
- TM names remain truncated due to the 12-character limit.
- Other minor Gen 1 quirks/glitches persist intentionally to preserve nostalgia.
