About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Master Quest: Johto follows the same philosophy as its Kanto counterpart: keep the region’s identity intact while making the gameplay deeper and more engaging.

Instead of expanding the Pokédex like many difficulty hacks, this one narrows its focus to the Johto regional experience, featuring a curated set of 256 Pokémon. Most Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokémon are removed, except a handful that are officially part of Johto’s extended dex (like Yanmega and Mamoswine).

The developer has heavily reworked the game behind the scenes—routes, trainer teams, and especially level-up learnsets have all been redesigned. Since TMs couldn’t be easily modified, they’ve been made mostly unnecessary by giving Pokémon extremely comprehensive level-up moves.

Like the Kanto version, this was originally a personal project, so while the gameplay systems are thoughtfully designed, some areas lack polish or full documentation.

Key Features

  • 256-Only Regional Dex: Focuses on Johto’s expanded Pokédex while removing most Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokémon, preserving regional identity.
  • Reworked Wild Encounters: Every route has been manually edited to improve encounter diversity and balance.
  • Trainer Roster Overhaul: All trainers have updated teams, combined with maximum AI for a more challenging experience.
  • Custom Movesets, Stats & Abilities: Pokémon have redesigned level-up learnsets, along with adjustments to stats and abilities for better usability.
  • TM System Reworked (Indirectly): TMs are largely unnecessary since level-up movesets include most useful moves.
  • All 256 Pokémon Obtainable: Nearly every Pokémon in the regional dex can be caught in-game, mostly through wild encounters.
  • QoL & Presentation Tweaks: Includes Kris as the playable character and features like the GB Player from the start (via base ROM enhancements).

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Poké Ball Seals Crash: Using seals, taking photos with Cameron, or interacting with the following Pokémon can crash the game.
  • Evolution Moveset Gaps: Delaying evolution or catching Pokémon late may cause missed moves due to imperfect moveset transitions.
  • Unsupported Evolutions: Non-regional evolutions exist but are not properly supported (no updated movesets or balancing).
  • Limited Documentation: Some mechanics and changes are not fully documented due to the project’s original scope.

A: It focuses on a curated Johto experience instead of expanding the Pokédex, while heavily improving encounters, movesets, and trainer battles.

Q: Who is this hack for?
A: It’s for players who want a more refined and challenging Johto playthrough without mixing in too many Pokémon from other regions.

Q: How many Pokémon are available in the game?
A: Around 256 Pokémon, primarily from Johto’s extended regional dex.

Q: Are Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokémon included?
A: Only a few that are part of Johto’s dex (like Mamoswine or Yanmega). Most are removed.

Q: How do movesets differ from the original game?
