Pokémon Hoenn White EX is a completed ROM hack of Pokémon White that reimagines the Unova experience with a strong Hoenn-inspired focus. Despite its name, the hack is not a remake of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald, nor does it take place in the Hoenn region. Instead, it uses the Pokémon White framework while replacing much of the available Pokémon roster, characters, and battle design with elements inspired by Hoenn.
Created as a successor to the original Hoenn White project, this version was rebuilt from scratch after development issues affected the previous hack. The developer aimed to create a more polished and significantly more challenging experience, with difficulty serving as one of the project's main selling points.
Players travel through the familiar Unova region, but encounter Hoenn-themed content throughout the journey. Hoenn starters replace the original choices, Brendan and May take on rival roles, Hoenn Gym Leaders appear as optional side battles, and many Pokémon have been rebalanced through stat and type adjustments.
While the game's storyline largely follows Pokémon White, various text edits were planned to create a different atmosphere. However, the completed version still retains much of the original Pokémon Black and White story structure.
