About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Paper Mario Redux is an unusual FireRed ROM hack that completely breaks away from standard Pokémon structure. Instead of focusing on Gym Leaders, badges, or the Elite Four, the project attempts to recreate the Paper Mario (N64) experience inside a Pokémon engine.

The developer explicitly states that this is not a traditional Pokémon journey, meaning classic systems like Gyms, badges, and even standard Pokémon gameplay concepts are either removed or heavily reworked. The goal is to deliver a chapter-based RPG adventure driven by story events, exploration, and scripted progression.

The hack blends Mario universe storytelling with FireRed mechanics, replacing the core identity of Pokémon gameplay with a Paper Mario-style adventure structure. However, the project is currently inactive, and Alpha 1 remains the latest available state.

Story Overview

The story is directly inspired by Paper Mario (N64).

Bowser steals the Star Rod, a powerful artifact that grants invincibility, and uses it to take control. During Princess Peach’s castle celebration, Bowser attacks, kidnaps the castle into the sky, and defeats Mario in battle due to his newfound power.

Mario is defeated and falls into a forest, where he is found unconscious by a Goomba Girl and taken to Goomba Village. While unconscious, he is visited by the Seven Star Spirits, who reveal that the only way to defeat Bowser is to travel to the Star Summit and restore balance.

After regaining consciousness, Mario begins his journey across a reimagined world filled with enemies, allies, and new interpretations of classic Paper Mario locations. Unlike traditional Pokémon games, the adventure is structured around chapters instead of gyms, with story progression driving all gameplay.
