About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Mirage of Tales: The Ages of Faith is a heavily story-focused and experimental FireRed ROM hack designed less like a traditional Pokémon game and more like an interactive medieval drama novel.

This entry is the first installment in a planned series called the “Ages of Faith” saga, where each hack explores different characters and historical events within a shared universe.

Unlike most Pokémon ROM hacks, this project is intentionally designed to be linear, narrative-driven, and non-player-choice focused, prioritizing storytelling over gameplay freedom.

The developer openly states that this project is meant to feel like a playable historical chronicle, where the player experiences events rather than shaping them.

Important design direction:

  • No major player agency in story outcomes
  • Linear progression tied to plot events
  • Focus on political conflict, religion, and war narrative themes
  • More like an “interactive novel” than a traditional Pokémon adventure

Story Overview

The story takes place in a medieval-inspired world where religion, empire, and ideology shape every conflict. The world is on the brink of collapse as rising extremism and political tension spark a massive conflict known as the Crusades of Faith.

Instead of a single protagonist, the game allows players to experience the world through multiple key characters, each representing different sides of the conflict.

Main Characters:

Prince Evandor
Heir to the throne of Izantine, a peaceful kingdom with mystical significance. His story revolves around political responsibility, internal conflict, and the burden of leadership during crisis.

Princess Zhafira
Daughter of the Draconic Empire, a vast and powerful empire that dominates much of the world. Her storyline focuses on political marriage, duty, and imperial expansion.

Kala
A former slave raised in a brutal gladiatorial system. After escaping, she becomes a symbol of rebellion and revenge against oppressive rulers.

Each character’s journey unfolds independently, but all are connected through the larger religious war and political collapse of the world.

The narrative emphasizes that:

  • Winning battles does not guarantee victory in the war
  • Characters act independently of player moral preference
  • You are experiencing history, not shaping it

Key Features

  • Interactive Novel Design: Gameplay is heavily story-driven, with long cutscenes, dialogue sequences, and minimal traditional Pokémon progression.
  • Multiple Playable Protagonists: Experience the conflict through different characters, each with their own motivations, social standing, and consequences.
  • Linear Canon Narrative: Player freedom is intentionally restricted to maintain historical consistency within the Mirage of Tales universe.
  • Medieval Setting: A unique world inspired by Middle Eastern and medieval aesthetics, complete with custom architecture, clothing, and environments.
  • Fictional Religions: Entirely original belief systems that influence politics, war, and personal alignment without representing real-world faiths.
  • Advanced Alignment System: Nine distinct alignments allow nuanced moral characterization, affecting dialogue, influence, and perception.
  • Influence System: NPCs remember your actions, altering relationships and responses based on hidden influence values.
  • No Modern Technology: No Pokédex, Poké Balls, PCs, or electricity—Pokémon acquisition and management are fully reimagined.
  • Temple-Based Healing: Pokémon Centers are replaced by religious temples, accessible only when aligned with the appropriate deity.
  • HM-Free Progression: No mandatory field moves; exploration is never locked behind HM usage.
  • Ridable Pokémon: Mount Pokémon like Salamence or Bastiodon to traverse the world instead of bicycles.
  • Extended Party System: A unique extension item allows carrying up to 12 Pokémon instead of the standard six.
  • Custom Item System: Overhauled items with unique icons, descriptions, and lore-specific functions.
  • Strategy Map Interface: An interactive world map used for planning travel, political decisions, and military actions.
  • Modern Battle Mechanics: Physical/Special split, Fairy type, and post–Gen 4 moves integrated via an upgraded battle engine.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • No custom title screen.
  • No Gen 4+ Pokémon cries implemented.
  • Music insertion is incomplete and inconsistent.
  • Journal items are currently non-functional.
  • Some cutscenes have visual quirks or placeholder effects.
  • Strategy map and finance systems are partially unfinished.
  • Nicknaming Pokémon is disabled due to freezing issues.
