About This ROM Hack

Pokémon FireRed Evolution is a difficulty‑enhanced ROM hack of Pokémon FireRed developed by jimmies. It overhauls the classic FireRed experience with modern mechanics—updating battles, evolutions, moves, abilities, and the type chart to closely follow Generation VI standards, including Fairy typing, new abilities, and improved balance.

In addition to difficulty and balance changes, FireRed Evolution expands the Pokémon roster, modernizes move and TM systems, improves sprites for many Pokémon, and replaces inconvenient evolution methods for a smoother experience.

Story Overview

The core story of FireRed Evolution follows the original Pokémon FireRed narrative, with Red beginning his journey in Pallet Town, collecting Gym Badges across Kanto, confronting Team Rocket, and ultimately challenging the Pokémon League. However, enhancements to mechanics and roster composition introduce additional challenge and strategic depth throughout the adventure.

While the overarching plot remains unchanged, players encounter expanded Pokémon availability and increased difficulty against trainers with modernized Pokémon rosters and movesets, making the classic Kanto journey feel fresh and more tactical.

Key Features

  • Expanded Pokémon Roster: All cross‑generation pre‑evolutions are included, bringing the total to about 416 Pokémon, all obtainable before the Elite Four.
  • Modern Mechanics: Gameplay updated close to Gen VI standards — including the Fairy type, stat adjustments, new abilities, and major move buffs.
  • Updated Move and TM System: Useful moves added to Move Tutors and TMs; TM purchases are scattered throughout PokéMarts.
  • Modernized Sprites: Most Pokémon have updated sprites to give the hack a more contemporary visual feel alongside mechanical updates.
  • Convenient Evolutions: Trade evolutions and other inconvenient evolution methods are replaced with more player‑friendly alternatives.
  • Balanced Trainer and Pokémon Stats: Several Pokémon have altered base stats, abilities, and learnsets for better performance and uniqueness (in enhanced versions).
  • Enhanced Move Viability: Many moves, including HM moves like Cut and Strength, are adjusted to be more useful in gameplay.
  • Gen IV–VI Integrations: Abilities introduced in Generation IV and beyond are incorporated to deepen battler strategy.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • The postgame (Sevii Islands 4–7) may be incomplete or unpolished compared to the main game, as the hack’s focus is on the main FireRed adventure.
  • Being a community patch, minor scripting discrepancies may occur, though the main progression is generally stable.
  • Some updated sprites or mechanics may not align perfectly with original engine constraints.
