About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Vega is probably one of the most well-known non-English ROM hacks out there. It was made by a Japanese team and has since been translated into English, so a lot more people can actually play it now.
What makes Vega stand out is that it doesn't really play it safe. It's hard, it's packed with custom content, and the entire Pokédex is original — no recycled Pokémon from the mainline games.
What is it exactly?
It's a full overhaul built on the FireRed engine, but it barely feels like FireRed once you're in it. You get a brand-new region called Tohoak, a huge roster of Fakemon, new moves, new music, and a difficulty that will genuinely test you if you're used to the official games.
One thing worth knowing — Vega is technically a sequel to Pokémon Altair and Sirius. Some of the story and lore ties back to those games. That said, you don't have to play them first. You'll just be missing a bit of background context, which honestly doesn't ruin the experience.
If you're looking for a Pokémon game that actually pushes back, this is one of the better ones to try.
Story Overview
Here's the rewritten version:
Vega's story is set in the Tohoak region, and it picks up in the aftermath of some pretty serious events — both from the Altair/Sirius games and something that happened even before that.
The Hoenn Catastrophe
Three years before Vega begins, Hoenn got hit by a meteor shower bad enough to reshape the entire region. The disaster didn't just wreck the land — it gave rise to a new type of Pokémon called Meteoric Pokémon, strange and powerful species that appeared out of nowhere.
Three of them were especially dangerous:
- Lylapse — could warp space itself
- Ganimede — messed with perception
- Nemea — straight-up mind control
They caused chaos, then vanished just as suddenly as they appeared.
Where Vega begins
After the dust settles from everything that went down in Altair and Sirius — Team BH, Team WH, people trying to hijack legendary Pokémon and bend the world to their will — the story moves into Vega.
You start back in your hometown, Porcelia Town, where your dad Professor Holly lives. Standard enough opening, but things escalate quickly. You've got Gym Leaders to beat, a new region to explore, and a lot of loose threads from the past that haven't been tied up.
Team DH is operating in the region. Ancient places like the Chateau of Time are waiting to be explored. And those Meteoric Pokémon? Their story isn't over.
The post-game
The main story is just the beginning. The post-game opens up a lot — extra missions, deeper lore, serious battles, and hidden locations like the Sphere Ruins. It's where a lot of the bigger answers start coming together.
If you haven't played Altair or Sirius, you can still follow along, but some of it will hit differently if you know the full history going in.
