About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Emerald Hoenn & National Dex Editions is a “vanilla+” style ROM hack designed to improve Pokémon Emerald without fundamentally changing its core gameplay systems. Unlike heavily modified hacks that introduce new mechanics, difficulty spikes, or generation-based reworks, this project focuses on accessibility, convenience, and completion-focused design.

The goal is simple: make everything obtainable and fix long-standing limitations while preserving the original feel of Pokémon Emerald. Players can choose between versions that either strictly preserve trainer battles or lightly adjust them to accommodate expanded Pokémon availability.

This hack is best described as a refined and modernized Emerald experience rather than a reimagined one, offering players a smoother way to complete the game without external tools or excessive grinding.

Key Features

  • Complete Pokédex Availability: All Hoenn Dex Pokémon (Hoenn Edition) or all 386 Pokémon (National Dex Edition) obtainable without trading.
  • National Dex from Start: In National Dex Edition, the Pokédex is automatically upgraded upon receiving it.
  • Faithful Gameplay Design: No Physical/Special split, no new moves, no new Pokémon, and no altered battle mechanics.
  • Running Indoors: Players can run indoors once Running Shoes are obtained.
  • Bug Fixes Included: HackMew’s RNG fix and Pomeg Berry glitch fix are applied.
  • Restored Ruby & Sapphire Pokémon: Lunatone, Zangoose, Meditite, Surskit, and Roselia are restored to early-game locations.
  • Starter Redistribution: Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip are placed in natural Hoenn locations for easier access.
  • Feebas Convenience Change: Feebas can be fished on Route 114 with a Good Rod.
  • Battle Frontier Improvements: Poké Mart sells all TMs, Evolution Stones, and every Berry.
  • Legendary Accessibility: Ferry events function properly with tickets found naturally in Hoenn.
  • Improved Rival Finale: The final rival battle uses a fully evolved starter.
  • Text De-capitalization: Nearly all ALL-CAPS dialogue removed for improved readability.
  • Visual Enhancements: Improved Pokémon sprites, animations, and corrected color palettes.
  • Optional Patch Support: Includes Day/Night visibility tweaks, uncensored trainer sprites, and minor Ruby/Sapphire-style adjustments.
  • Light National Dex Version: Optional version that adds Pokémon availability without modifying trainers.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Fossil Maniac postgame dialogue still references “FossilS”
  • Lilycove City Poké Mart NPC behavior may appear inconsistent
  • Occasional capitalization inconsistencies (e.g., PokéNav vs Pokenav)
  • Deoxys Speed Forme backsprite displays minor visual issues
  • National Dex Edition does not add new Legendary events (intentional)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the main goal of these hacks?
A: To allow full Pokédex completion in Pokémon Emerald without trading, events, or major gameplay changes.

Q: Are there new Pokémon, moves, or abilities?
A: No. These hacks intentionally avoid adding modern mechanics.

Q: Is the Physical/Special split included?
A: No. The battle system remains identical to vanilla Emerald.

Q: What is the difference between Hoenn Dex and National Dex Editions?
A: Hoenn Dex includes only Hoenn Pokémon, while National Dex allows all 386 Pokémon to be obtained.
