About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Electric Yellow is a passion project with a specific goal: bring the Pokémon Adventures manga to life inside the FireRed engine, as faithfully as possible.

Rather than taking loose inspiration from the source material, the hack attempts to actually follow it — retelling Red and Yellow's journeys with key events, characters, and emotional beats adapted into playable form. Kanto and Johto arcs are woven together into a single experience, and the visual side has been reworked to match. Pokémon sprites are redesigned to reflect their manga appearances, locations are adapted accordingly, and the overall presentation is built around immersion and narrative accuracy rather than mechanics or difficulty.

It's a different kind of hack — scripted events and storytelling are the priority here, not balance or challenge systems.

The honest caveat is that the project appears to be in an inconsistent state. Development progress is unclear, some features seem unfinished or experimental, and there's no well-defined release version to point to. The ambition is obvious, but how much of it is fully realized at any given point is hard to pin down.

If you're a fan of the Adventures manga and want to see that world made playable, the idea behind this one is compelling. Just go in knowing it's a work in progress.

Story Overview

The story closely follows the events of the Pokémon Adventures manga, primarily focusing on Red and Yellow’s journeys, with some integration of later arcs.

It begins with Red, a young trainer who receives a Bulbasaur from Professor Oak and sets out on a journey to collect Gym Badges and become stronger. Along the way, he encounters his rival Blue (Oak’s grandson) and the mysterious Green, who initially appears as a trickster but becomes more important as the story progresses.

Red battles Gym Leaders such as Brock, Misty, and Erika, and becomes entangled in conflicts with Team Rocket. During his journey, he captures several Pokémon including Pikachu, Snorlax, Eevee, and Aerodactyl, while also evolving key members of his team like Venusaur and Poliwrath.

As the story escalates, Team Rocket kidnaps Professor Oak and attempts to exploit powerful Pokémon such as Mewtwo. Red, Blue, and Green unite to stop them, battling powerful opponents like Lt. Surge, Koga, and Sabrina. Eventually, Red reaches the Pokémon League and defeats Blue to become Champion.

The narrative then shifts to Yellow’s story. Red mysteriously disappears after being trapped by the Elite Four, prompting Yellow to search for him. With help from allies like Blue, Green, and other Gym Leaders, Yellow confronts the Elite Four’s plan to wipe out humanity using a Legendary Pokémon.

Through teamwork and combined strength, Yellow ultimately defeats Lance and prevents global destruction.

The hack also plans to incorporate elements from the Johto arc, blending multiple generations into one cohesive storyline.
