About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Dark Crystal Version is a large-scale Emerald-based ROM hack created by Sky High. It introduces a brand-new region called Hairo, expands the Pokédex to include Pokémon up to Generation VI (721 total), and modernizes battle mechanics while keeping the traditional Pokémon structure intact.

The hack gained recognition after winning 1st Place – Hack of the Month (September 2015). Its focus is on classic Pokémon progression—Gyms, Elite Four, League Champion—combined with expanded lore, missions, legendary hunts, and modern battle updates like the Physical/Special split and Fairy-type inclusion.

Dark Crystal aims to blend nostalgia with ambition: a traditional journey layered with post-Gen III mechanics and large Pokédex integration.

Story Overview

In the Hairo region, humans and Pokémon coexist in harmony. Bonds are formed in times of peace, strengthened in times of battle, and tested during crisis. Yet, beneath this balance lie ancient mysteries waiting to be uncovered.

In the present day, the region’s Professor returns to Hairo after traveling across other regions. Upon arrival, she recalls three childhood friends—once inseparable and full of potential—who dreamed of becoming great Trainers. Now grown, they are summoned back to Sketchy Town, where the Professor assigns them a research mission, challenges them to face the Hairo League, and encourages them to pursue their long-held dreams.

As the player, you explore Hairo while battling rivals, Gym Leaders, the Elite Four, and special trainers across the region. However, peace does not last. A villainous organization known as Team Enigma emerges, seeking domination over Hairo and the world. Their actions revolve around ancient secrets and powerful Legendary Pokémon scattered throughout the region.

Along your journey, you will:

  • Investigate Team Enigma’s motives
  • Battle powerful Legendary and Mythical Pokémon
  • Challenge the Battle Frontier and its Frontier Brains
  • Uncover hidden events and missions
  • Decide your path toward becoming Hairo’s Champion

The journey combines traditional League progression with deeper lore and side systems that expand beyond the standard Emerald formula.

Key Features

  • Expanded Pokédex (721 Pokémon): Pokémon from Generations I through VI are included, complete with forms, formes, and Mega Evolutions (planned/partially implemented). Data updates such as stats and movesets reflect cross-generation adjustments. Early gameplay features a mixed pool of 251 Pokémon.
  • New Moves & Move Updates: Moves up to Generation VI are included (e.g., Flare Blitz, Moonblast), along with custom-made moves unique to the hack. Older moves were updated to reflect later-gen mechanics (for example, Crunch lowering Defense).
  • New Abilities & Ability Updates: Modern abilities like Motor Drive and Mold Breaker are implemented. Older abilities are updated to match newer functionality (e.g., Sturdy surviving at 1 HP from a full knockout hit).
  • Fairy Type Added: The Fairy-type is fully integrated into the type chart and battle system.
  • Physical / Special / Status Split: Moves are properly categorized with icon previews, allowing clear strategic planning during battles.
  • Mega Evolution (Planned/Partial): Mega Evolutions are intended, with FireRed implementation mentioned during development. Some groundwork exists, though not fully realized in this Emerald beta.
  • Infinite TMs: TMs no longer break after use, allowing unlimited teaching.
  • Capture EXP System: Players gain Experience Points for catching Pokémon, encouraging Pokédex completion.
  • New Repel System: When a Repel wears off, the game automatically prompts you to use another—similar to Gen V quality-of-life mechanics.
  • Poison Survival System (Gen IV Style): Pokémon no longer faint from overworld poison. Instead, they drop to 1 HP and are cured automatically.
  • Missions System: Side missions unlock rare items, special encounters, and hidden events.
  • Battle Frontier Included: Frontier Brains provide endgame-level challenge beyond the Elite Four.
  • Rearranged Music: Soundtracks inspired by HeartGold/SoulSilver and Black/White are rearranged for the GBA sound engine.
  • Easter Eggs & Hidden Events: Special hidden triggers and rare Pokémon encounters reward thorough exploration.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Some Generation IV+ Pokémon cannot learn TMs/HMs properly.
  • Certain abilities (Rivalry, Sand Force, Sand Rush) are not implemented and may do nothing.
  • Signboards inside Mountburg Library lack proper text.
  • Beta 1.0 ends early: progression stops after encountering three Team Enigma grunts beyond Crystallus Grotto (only one badge obtainable).
