About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Exceeded is a feature-rich Pokémon Emerald decompilation ROM hack that focuses on expanding nearly every aspect of the original game while still keeping Hoenn recognizable. Rather than simply adding newer Pokémon, the hack introduces extensive battle mechanics, quality-of-life improvements, gameplay customization, and one of its most distinctive systems: Innates.

Unlike standard Pokémon Abilities, Innates allow a Pokémon to possess up to three additional passive abilities, greatly increasing strategic depth. Some mechanics, such as Mold Breaker-style abilities and Gastro Acid, interact with Innates, while others, like Neutralizing Gas, do not. Certain Pokémon even unlock additional Innates through leveling up, friendship, evolution, or completing specific quests, giving long-term progression more importance than in the original games.

The hack also emphasizes player freedom. From the beginning, players can tailor their experience using an extensive collection of optional gameplay modifiers, including Nuzlocke Mode, Randomizer, Sandbox Mode, Mirror Mode, Inversed Type Matchups, AI-controlled battles, and numerous challenge settings. Combined with four separate difficulty options, Pokémon Exceeded can be enjoyed as either a relaxed adventure or a highly demanding strategy game.

As an Emerald decomp project, the hack incorporates many mechanics from later Pokémon generations while also introducing completely original moves, abilities, weather conditions, balance changes, and battle systems inspired by games such as Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

Story Overview

Pokémon Exceeded takes place in an alternate timeline where the protagonist and their rival, Red or Leaf, move to the Hoenn region before beginning their journey through Kanto.

Because no young Trainers were present to stop Team Rocket's original plans, Giovanni successfully conquered the Kanto region. Having secured control there, he forms alliances with several other villainous organizations to expand Team Rocket's influence into Hoenn.

While the adventure largely follows the structure of the original Pokémon Emerald, this alternate history creates a different backdrop for the player's journey. As the story unfolds, players are free to explore Hoenn while confronting the growing alliance of villain teams. After completing the main adventure, additional content becomes available through an expanded Battle Frontier, featuring new Pokémon, battles, and strategies.
