About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Beta Emerald is a quality-of-life focused ROM hack created as a first hacking project. While it largely follows the original Pokémon Emerald storyline and structure, it introduces numerous gameplay improvements, modern mechanics, and additional content.

The goal of the hack is to make Emerald smoother and more convenient to play while also expanding the game's offerings. Players will find faster interactions, modern features inspired by later Pokémon generations, and access to a much larger pool of Pokémon.

Beyond quality-of-life changes, the hack also introduces two new event-style experiences: a post-game storyline centered around Deoxys and a puzzle involving Mewtwo that can be accessed early in the game but cannot be completed right away.

Story Overview

In addition to the original storyline, the hack introduces extra lore and events involving legendary Pokémon. After completing the main adventure, players can experience a new post-game story focused on Deoxys. There is also a special puzzle tied to Mewtwo that can be accessed early in the game, though solving it and obtaining Mewtwo requires much later progress.

  • Faster Pokémon Center Healing: Nurse Joy interactions are quicker to reduce downtime.
  • 2-in-1 Bike: The Mach and Acro bikes are combined into one bike, switchable by pressing R.
  • Modern Premier Ball Bonus: Buying Poké Balls in bulk rewards Premier Balls similar to modern Pokémon games.
  • XY-Style Summary Screen Wrapping: Scrolling past the last Pokémon in the party loops back to the first.
  • Item Descriptions on Pickup: When picking up items, a description appears explaining what the item does.
  • Poké Ball Switching: Players can change which Poké Ball a Pokémon is stored in.
  • Multiple Registered Items: Multiple items can be registered to the L button.
  • Overworld Deoxys Form Change: After capturing Deoxys, its form can be changed at Devon Corp.
  • All Evolution Items Available: Evolution items can be purchased in Lilycove Department Store.
  • New Gym Leader Teams: Gym leaders have updated Pokémon teams for a fresher challenge.
  • Improved Shiny Odds: Shiny Pokémon appear with a rate of 1 in 256.
  • Wild Double Battle Chance: Wild battles have a small chance (3%) to become double battles.
  • HM Quality of Life: Pokémon can forget HM moves and item healing does not return players to the bag after each use.
