About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Robust Red is a FireRed-based difficulty ROM hack designed around a major battle system twist: nearly every fully evolved Pokémon receives a secondary typing, dramatically changing battle dynamics and team-building strategies.
Inspired by challenging ROM hacks such as Emerald Kaizo and Vintage White, Robust Red focuses on forcing players to rethink familiar matchups by altering type interactions on a large scale. This creates a more unpredictable and strategically demanding version of the original Kanto experience.
The hack does not drastically change the Kanto region layout or core FireRed structure, but instead heavily modifies how battles function at a mechanical level. As a result, even familiar trainers and Pokémon feel significantly different due to the expanded type system.
Story Overview
The story follows the traditional Kanto journey from Pokémon FireRed, with minor dialogue edits and additional NPCs added throughout the region.
Players can progress normally until Lt. Surge, after which the game deliberately blocks further progression. The primary focus of the hack is not narrative expansion, but rather reimagining Kanto battles through altered Pokémon typings and modernized mechanics.
