About This ROM Hack
Pokémon True Kanto is a difficulty and balance-focused ROM hack of Pokémon FireRed that attempts to recreate the Kanto adventure in a way the creator believes makes more sense as a true champion’s journey. The hack reworks trainer teams, Gym Leaders, Pokémon stats, and movesets to create a more competitive experience while still staying within the original Kanto setting.
The game is designed with challenge runs in mind, particularly Nuzlocke playthroughs with level caps. Difficulty gradually increases throughout the game, starting slightly harder than the vanilla FireRed experience and eventually reaching very high difficulty by the time players reach the Elite Four and Champion battles.
Despite its focus on difficulty, the hack still allows casual play. Players can enjoy a familiar Kanto adventure while experiencing rebalanced mechanics, stronger trainers, and new challenges across the region.
The hack keeps the familiar world of Kanto intact but reshapes the experience into something closer to a competitive training journey rather than a casual adventure.
Key Features
- Kanto-Only Pokédex: The game includes only the original 150 Pokémon from Kanto, keeping the experience focused on the classic roster.
- Rebalanced Pokémon: Many Pokémon have adjusted stats and movesets to make weaker species more viable and competitive.
- Improved Trainer Battles: Trainers, Gym Leaders, and rivals have stronger teams and smarter strategies.
- Modified Moves and Movesets: Pokémon movesets have been redesigned to better match the hack’s competitive balance.
- No EV Yields from Battles: Pokémon no longer gain EVs through normal battles, altering the progression and balance of team building.
- Level Curve Adjustment: The level progression has been changed, eventually reaching level 100 by the Champion fight.
- Gauntlet Challenges: Certain points in the game include gauntlet-style battles where players must defeat multiple strong trainers consecutively.
- Final Secret Challenge: Before Victory Road, players encounter a special challenge involving all Gym Leaders using full competitive teams.
- Grinding Support: Easy grinding spots and purchasable Rare Candies are available at the Celadon Department Store.
- EXP Variant Mode: An alternate version where Pokémon gain no experience from battles and leveling relies on Rare Candies, creating additional resource management challenges.
Known Bugs & Issues
- Changing the text speed may cause text to disappear. The game is intended to remain at maximum text speed.
- Entering the third floor of the Celadon Department Store causes a crash. The staircase is blocked, but entering via the elevator may still freeze the game.
- After defeating Blaine, the rival Ash may appear as Bill and ask the player to go to the Sevii Islands. This event has no further impact.
- Picking up items in the overworld sometimes displays a strange “!n” textbox.
- A rare softlock may occur on certain emulators if the player talks twice to the PokéMart clerk before delivering Oak’s parcel.
