About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Fire Red Extended is a small add-on style ROM hack built on top of the original Pokémon FireRed experience. Instead of completely redesigning the game, the hack adds extra features and optional content meant to make the adventure more varied and interesting.
One of the most notable additions is an optional Team Rocket route. During the Nugget Bridge encounter in Cerulean City, players can accept the offer to join Team Rocket, which changes several interactions throughout the game. While playing as a Rocket member, you gain access to special Poké Balls capable of stealing Pokémon from trainers, and some Rocket members will no longer challenge you.
The hack also introduces new islands, hidden maps, post-game content, legendary encounters, and small Easter eggs placed throughout the world. Several locations inspired by other Pokémon games are recreated inside FireRed, giving returning players new places to explore after finishing the main story.
Overall, this project feels like a content extension of the original FireRed adventure, adding optional paths, secrets, and additional challenges without drastically changing the core gameplay.
Story Overview
The main story still follows the events of Pokémon FireRed, where the player begins their journey in Pallet Town and travels across the Kanto region collecting Gym Badges and eventually challenging the Pokémon League.
However, this hack introduces a key choice during the Nugget Bridge event in Cerulean City. Instead of rejecting the offer from Team Rocket, players can accept and become part of the organization. This decision unlocks a different style of gameplay where Rocket Balls allow the player to attempt to capture Pokémon owned by trainers.
Beyond the main story, the hack adds several optional post-game events and locations. After defeating the Elite Four, players can access new areas, including a special Mewtwo challenge, hidden islands, and additional legendary encounters.
New locations include rebuilt islands inspired by other Pokémon games, such as Faraway Island, as well as custom areas containing legendary Pokémon and secrets. Some events are hidden throughout the world and require specific Pokémon in the player’s party to activate them.
These additions encourage exploration even after finishing the main story and reward players who search for hidden interactions and Easter eggs.
Key Features
- Team Rocket Playthrough Option: During the Nugget Bridge encounter, players can choose to join Team Rocket. Accepting this offer unlocks special Rocket Balls and alters interactions with certain Rocket members across the region.
- Rocket Balls Mechanic: Rocket Balls allow the player to attempt to capture one Pokémon from an opposing trainer’s team during battle. The capture rate is not guaranteed.
- Alternate NPC Behavior: While playing as a Rocket member, Team Rocket members located in places such as Saffron City, Celadon City, and certain islands will not battle the player.
- Modified Icefall Cave Battle: On Island Four, the Icefall Cave event changes so players can battle Lorelei instead of fighting Team Rocket.
- New Event Islands: Tickets found in Cerulean Cave allow access to previously unavailable event islands.
- Recreated Special Locations: The hack includes locations such as Faraway Island from Pokémon Emerald, along with other custom islands built specifically for this project.
- Legendary Beast Island: A special island includes encounters with legendary Pokémon such as Suicune, Raikou, and Entei.
- Post-Game Mewtwo Challenge: After defeating the Elite Four, players can challenge Mewtwo again through a special event connected to Vermilion Harbor.
- Clone Laboratory System: Defeating Mewtwo unlocks a laboratory where Pokémon can be cloned. The cloned Pokémon may have a different gender, nature, or moves.
- Hidden Hoenn Map: A large hidden map includes Pokémon from the Hoenn region and additional legendary encounters.
- Trade Evolution Fixes: Pokémon that normally require trading to evolve now evolve through alternate in-game methods.
- Increased Shiny Rate: The chance of encountering shiny Pokémon has been significantly increased compared to the original game.
- Hidden Events and Easter Eggs: Secret interactions can be triggered in locations such as Pallet Town, the Pokémon Mansion, and the player’s bedroom after completing the Pokémon League.
