About This ROM Hack
Pokemon Emerald Double Up Delevelled is a heavily modified “vanilla+” ROM hack of Pokémon Emerald that focuses on introducing modern battle mechanics while changing how progression and combat difficulty work.
The hack makes two major gameplay changes that completely redefine how battles function. First, nearly every trainer battle in the game is converted into a double battle, forcing players to build teams and strategies that function well in cooperative battle scenarios. Second, Pokémon stats are no longer tied to level progression. Instead, stats are calculated using base stats, IVs, EVs, and nature, creating a competitive-style environment where level plays a much smaller role in determining battle strength.
Alongside these major changes, the hack integrates numerous battle engine upgrades inspired by later Pokémon generations. These include updated stats, moves, abilities, and mechanics up to Generation 8 standards, as well as the addition of Fairy typing and the Physical/Special split.
The goal of the project is to create a new challenge using the familiar Hoenn framework. Battles become more tactical due to the constant presence of double battles, while the removal of level-based stat scaling encourages players to think about team synergy, positioning, and move combinations rather than simply grinding levels.
Despite the difficulty, the hack also includes many quality-of-life improvements designed to make experimentation easier and reduce grinding, making it a viable challenge for Nuzlocke runs and repeat playthroughs.
Key Features
- Double Battle Gameplay System: Nearly every trainer battle involving multiple Pokémon is converted into a double battle, dramatically changing the pace and strategy of combat.
- Wild Double Battles: Approximately 30% of wild encounters feature double battles, encouraging players to build teams capable of handling multi-target combat scenarios.
- Level-Independent Stat System: Pokémon stats are no longer tied to level progression. Instead, stats are calculated using base stats, IVs, and nature, while EVs modify these values as they are earned.
- Fixed Damage Scaling: As of later versions, battle damage is no longer scaled by level, further reinforcing the competitive-style stat system.
- Expanded Pokémon Availability: Encounter tables have been modified so that all Pokémon can be obtained within the game.
- Deoxys Form Access: All four forms of Deoxys are available through special encounter systems.
- Hyper Training System: A post-game feature allows players to improve Pokémon stats through Hyper Training mechanics.
- Move Swapping System: Players can swap moves while exploring without needing a move tutor, although this does not apply to Egg Moves.
- Generation 8 Battle Updates: Pokémon base stats, movesets, abilities, and other combat mechanics have been updated to reflect Generation 8 standards.
- Generation 7 Battle Mechanics: Critical hits, status effects, weather mechanics, and item behavior follow Generation 7 rules.
- Physical/Special Split: Moves are categorized individually as physical or special rather than being determined by type.
- Fairy Type Added: The Fairy typing is included with its modern effectiveness rules.
- Ghost Type Escape Changes: Ghost-type Pokémon cannot be trapped by moves like Mean Look or abilities like Shadow Tag and can flee wild battles.
- Modern EV/IV System Behavior: EV and IV changes are applied after battle rather than mid-combat.
- Mew and Deoxys Obedience Fix: These Pokémon obey the player normally rather than requiring special conditions.
- Quality of Life Systems: Numerous convenience improvements have been added, including colored nature indicators, IV/EV checkers, indoor running, and infinite TM use.
- Removable HMs: HM moves can be forgotten like normal moves, reducing team restrictions.
- Move Summary in Battle: Players can view detailed move information during battles by pressing Start.
- Trainer Rematch System: Trainer rematches are available from the beginning of the game.
- Trade Evolution Fix: Pokémon that normally evolve through trading now evolve via level 35 or specific evolution items.
- Hidden Abilities: Hidden abilities are available in the wild at a 5% encounter rate.
- Increased Shiny Odds: Shiny Pokémon appear at roughly a 1% spawn rate.
- Perfect IV Wild Encounters: All wild Pokémon spawn with at least three perfect IVs.
- Wild Item Drops: Defeated wild Pokémon can drop their held items.
- HM Utility Changes: HMs can be used in the overworld without needing to be taught to a Pokémon.
