About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Kanto Ultimate is a large-scale enhancement and difficulty hack of Pokémon FireRed that aims to transform the Kanto region into a far more expansive and challenging experience.
The project significantly expands the scope of the original game by introducing Pokémon from Generation 1 through Generation 9, including Paradox Pokémon, custom Sevii variants, and several Fakemon. In addition to the expanded Pokédex, the hack upgrades the visual style with DS-style tilesets, improved trainer sprites, and updated Pokémon overworld graphics.
The game also expands the Kanto world map by integrating locations that were not originally present in FireRed, such as Tohjo Falls and Mt. Silver, helping connect Kanto with Johto lore and geography. Several special islands, such as Southern Island and Mirage Island, have also been added to support legendary encounters and additional exploration.
Beyond the visual upgrades and expanded content, the hack focuses heavily on difficulty. Trainers use stronger teams, improved AI, and fully optimized Pokémon. Gym Leaders, rivals, and Elite Four battles have been completely redesigned with full teams of six Pokémon and more strategic movesets.
The hack also includes numerous references to Pokémon anime characters, manga characters, and protagonists from multiple Pokémon games, creating a crossover-style experience where players encounter many well-known characters from across the franchise.
Key Features
- Expanded Pokédex (Gen 1–9): Pokémon from Generation 1 through Generation 9 are available, including Paradox Pokémon, Sevii regional variants, and several Fakemon species.
- DS-Style Visual Upgrade: The game uses a DS-inspired tileset and improved graphics that significantly modernize the visual style of the Kanto region.
- Expanded Kanto Map: New locations, including Tohjo Falls and Mt. Silver, have been added, helping complete the geographic connection between Kanto and Johto.
- Additional Special Islands: Southern Island and Mirage Island have been added as explorable areas, typically tied to legendary encounters and rare Pokémon events.
- Updated Sprites: Trainer sprites, Pokémon sprites, and overworld character graphics have been updated for a more modern presentation.
- Physical/Special Split: Moves now follow the modern battle system, where each move is classified as either physical or special individually.
- Reusable TMs and Removable HMs: TMs can be used infinitely, and HM moves can be forgotten, greatly improving team flexibility.
- Expanded Rival System: Two additional rivals based on the characters Blue and Yellow from the Pokémon manga appear throughout the game.
- Throwback Feature Integration: The hack includes systems from the “Throwback” ROM hack project, such as GB Sounds, Bill’s PC trading features, and special event locations like Faraway Island.
- Cross-Region Trainer Battles: Gym Leaders from Johto and Hoenn, as well as many Elite Four members, appear in the overworld as optional trainers that can be battled and rematched.
- Orange Islands Leaders: Leaders from the Orange Islands appear as additional challenge trainers and are fully rematchable.
- Battle Frontier Characters: Frontier Brains are included as high-level optional opponents.
- Crossover Character Encounters: Many well-known characters from across the Pokémon franchise appear as battle opponents, including Ash, Silver, Wally, Eusine, Ruby, Sapphire, Gold, Crystal, Lyra, and others.
- Legendary Event Encounters: Special events allow players to encounter Pokémon such as Suicune, Entei, Raikou, Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Latios, Latias, Celebi, Jirachi, and the Red Gyarados.
- Enhanced Trainer Difficulty: Trainers have scaled teams, improved AI, and stronger Pokémon builds to provide a significantly harder challenge than the original FireRed.
- Gym Leader Overhaul: All Gym Leaders use full teams of six Pokémon and can be rematched for additional battles.
- Trainer House Feature: The Trainer House from Pokémon Gold, Pokémon Silver, and Pokémon Crystal has been added to Viridian City, allowing infinite rematches against Gym Leaders, rivals, and Elite Four members.
- Anime-Inspired Events: Jessie and James appear as recurring battle encounters, similar to their appearances in the Pokémon anime.
- Special Starter System: Players can obtain Pikachu as a fourth Poké Ball starter option, while the traditional Kanto starters can still be found in locations similar to Pokémon Yellow.
- Perfect EV System: Pokémon are designed to have optimized stat distributions while enemy trainers are scaled to maintain the hack’s difficulty level.
Known Bugs & Issues
- Pokedex - The main real error with the game is when accessing the National Dex it causes the game to crash
- Tileset Errors - Sometimes, entering certain areas, graphical glitches occur from the tilesets overlapping. Just move around a little in the map, and it will sort itself out.
- Rock Tunnel Cut Tree - The sign from outside the Trainer House in Viridian appears next to the old cut position, for a reason I’m yet to work out.
- Hero Sprite - Reverting to D/P/P sprite when not on foot, as I couldn’t find any other of Red to insert. The female overworld sprite being Dawn as well, for the same reason; all the other sprites are updated, so it looked out of place not to replace her sprite.
- Cinabbar Gym Entrance – Make sure you talk to Blue and make her disappear in the room before the card key in the Pokemon Mansion, or the person in front of the gym door will not disappear.
