About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Wonder Guard Version is a challenge-focused ROM hack of Pokémon Emerald created by AeroMaster7 (BigBoss on Pokémon Hacking Organization). Unlike traditional story hacks, this project keeps the original Emerald adventure largely intact while dramatically changing the game's mechanics. The defining feature is simple but completely transforms gameplay: every Pokémon in the game has the Wonder Guard Ability instead of its normal Ability.
Because Wonder Guard only allows Pokémon to be damaged by super-effective moves, every battle becomes a strategic puzzle. Team building, move coverage, and planning are far more important than in a standard Pokémon Emerald playthrough. The creator designed the hack primarily as a foundation for Randomizer runs and Nuzlocke challenges, although it can also be played normally for a very different Pokémon experience.
Beyond the central mechanic, the hack includes Fairy-type support, Sylveon, revised movesets, altered typings, quality-of-life improvements, additional starters, difficulty adjustments, and several gameplay tweaks. Although released as a beta, multiple updates addressed major issues and added new features, making the latest available version significantly more stable than earlier releases.
Key Features
- Wonder Guard for Every Pokémon: Every Pokémon has Wonder Guard instead of its normal Ability, meaning they can only be damaged by super-effective attacks, fundamentally changing every battle.
- Challenge-Focused Gameplay: Designed primarily for Randomizer and Nuzlocke playthroughs, encouraging strategic team building and careful planning.
- Fairy Type Added: Fairy-type Pokémon and Fairy-type moves have been implemented using the Pokémon Emerald Fairy Base.
- Sylveon Included: Sylveon has been added to the game and can be obtained through an in-game trade. It cannot evolve from Eevee, and players are advised not to capture any wild Sylveon due to a known save-breaking bug.
- Modified Movesets: Several Pokémon have altered learnsets to ensure the game remains beatable despite the Wonder Guard mechanic.
- Increased Difficulty: Trainer battles and overall gameplay have been adjusted to provide a more challenging experience.
- Regional Starters Available: Starter Pokémon from Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn can all be found before reaching the first Gym if players explore carefully.
- Trade Evolution Changes: Pokémon that normally evolve through trading have alternative evolution methods.
- Updated Poké Marts: Shop inventories have been changed to better suit the modified gameplay.
- Purchasable Event Tickets: Event items can be purchased after reaching the Elite Four, allowing access to event-related content.
- Day & Night System: Includes a functional Day and Night system when using an emulator with RTC (Real-Time Clock) enabled.
- Adjusted Pokémon Types: Some Pokémon have modified typings to improve overall balance.
- Enhanced Shedinja: Shedinja has been given more than 1 HP to better fit the game's unique mechanics.
- Post-Game Battle: After completing the main story, players may battle the creator instead of Steven, although the creator notes this feature may have been accidentally removed in later versions.
- Retyped Normal Moves: Damaging Normal-type moves have been retyped to ensure they remain useful under the Wonder Guard rules.
- Quality-of-Life Improvements: Later updates introduced features such as the National Pokédex from the start, indoor running, and other minor gameplay enhancements.
Known Bugs & Issues
The developer has documented several known issues that remain in the beta release.
- Sylveon's battle animation is partially glitched.
- The "THE END" screen uses incorrect colors. The developer chose not to fix this because it does not affect gameplay.
- Sylveon does not have a Pokédex entry.
- Some trainer battles may be impossible without specific Pokémon or move types. Players are encouraged to save frequently, as restarting from a previous save may be necessary.
- Do not capture a wild Sylveon. If one appears unexpectedly, run away immediately. Catching it may corrupt your save file. Only obtain Sylveon through the intended in-game trade.
