About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Pure Crystal is a ROM hack by Suaqua (also known as Taro) that modifies Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver while taking loose inspiration from the original Pokémon Crystal Version. Rather than recreating Crystal, the project focuses on making the Johto adventure significantly more challenging through tougher trainers, stronger Gym Leaders, improved wild encounters, and a wider variety of obtainable Pokémon.

The hack introduces numerous gameplay adjustments designed to keep the entire journey engaging from beginning to end. Wild Pokémon levels have been increased, additional species have been distributed throughout Johto and Kanto, and several Pokémon have received updated typings or level-up moves. Evolution methods have also been streamlined by removing trade requirements, making it easier to complete teams without needing another game.

Development progressed through multiple beta releases before reaching Version 1.0, with the final release featuring all encounter tables completed and more than 550 trainers edited.

Key Features

  • Higher-Level Wild Pokémon: Wild Pokémon appear at higher levels throughout the game, creating a more consistent level curve and providing greater challenge.
  • Expanded Wild Pokémon Distribution: Numerous additional Pokémon have been placed throughout Johto and Kanto, giving players more variety when building their teams.
  • No Weak Kanto Encounters: The wild Pokémon found throughout Kanto have been upgraded, removing many of the low-level encounters present in the original games.
  • Edited Level-Up Movesets: Several Pokémon learn different moves through leveling up, providing new strategies and improving overall usability.
  • Trade Evolutions Removed: Pokémon that normally require trading can now evolve without needing another player.
  • Wild Baby Pokémon on Route 34: Route 34 now features wild baby Pokémon, allowing players to obtain these species much earlier.
  • Increased Trainer Difficulty: Trainers throughout the game have stronger teams and improved levels to create a more challenging adventure.
  • More Difficult Gym Leaders: Gym Leaders have been significantly strengthened, making badges considerably harder to earn than in the original games.
  • Harder Rival Battles: The rival now uses different starter Pokémon from multiple generations, with completely redesigned teams that offer more varied battles.
  • Updated Pokémon Typings: Certain Pokémon have received new secondary types, including examples such as Shinx, Starly, Magby, and Elekid, along with other species.
  • Special Move Options for Pichu: Pichu can learn additional special moves that are unavailable in the original games.
  • Extensive Trainer Overhaul: The completed release features more than 550 edited trainers, making nearly every major battle more competitive.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • The developer documented a known glitch involving level-up moves for certain edited Pokémon, specifically mentioning Magmortar and Electivire. These Pokémon may occasionally learn moves they normally cannot learn, TM-exclusive moves, or moves of unexpected types.
  • Aside from this documented issue, no additional major bugs were listed for Version 1.0.
