About This ROM Hack
Pokémon New Gold Era is a complete and final version of an older project (originally released in 2012 and updated in 2018), now fully revised and corrected. This version replaces all previous ones and is presented as the definitive experience.
Pokémon New Gold Era takes a bold approach compared to typical enhancement hacks. Instead of just improving mechanics or difficulty, it reimagines the entire Johto and Kanto regions in a futuristic, alternate timeline.
The hack introduces a more quest-driven progression system, new areas, and heavy environmental storytelling focused on the effects of urbanization. Alongside this, it modernizes Pokémon mechanics with updated movesets, TM compatibility, and various gameplay tweaks inspired by later generations.
The final version focuses heavily on polish—fixing dialogue, rebalancing difficulty, improving maps, and refining progression — to deliver a smoother, more complete experience.
Story Overview
The story takes place approximately 100 years after the events of the original Pokémon Gold, in an alternate version of Johto and Kanto.
Over the past century, rapid technological advancement and urban expansion have drastically reshaped the regions. Cities have grown larger, high-tech infrastructure is everywhere, and nature has begun to suffer as a result.
You begin your journey in Goldenrod City, rather than a small hometown, immediately placing you in the heart of this advanced world. Instead of a purely linear Gym challenge, your progression is more quest-oriented—you’ll often need to complete specific objectives, find key items, and explore new locations to move forward.
Along the way, you’ll encounter a mysterious rival whose motivations are tied to the deeper themes of this altered world. As you travel across the transformed Johto and Kanto, you’ll uncover how this “new era” came to be—and what it means for both people and Pokémon.
