About This ROM Hack
Pokemon Hero's Path is an in-progress Pokémon FireRed ROM hack that reimagines the beginning of the Johto journey from a completely different perspective. Instead of playing as a brand-new trainer, you take control of Red, the legendary Champion of Kanto, immediately after his victory over the Elite Four. Rather than retelling the familiar Generation II story, the hack explores what could have happened if Red became directly involved in the events unfolding across Johto.
The project originally began as a concept several years before development restarted from scratch. After relearning scripting and reorganizing the overall design, the developer produced a playable demo that showcases the early direction of the game. The primary goal is to create a sequel-like experience that exists within the established Generation II timeline while introducing an entirely new storyline and player perspective.
Although still early in development, the available information makes it clear that storytelling is the central focus, with classic Johto locations being rebuilt and altered to better support the new narrative. The developer also planned numerous custom events, revised maps, and original interactions that distinguish the hack from simply recreating Johto.
Story Overview
The adventure begins shortly after Red has become the Champion of Kanto by defeating the Elite Four. Having earned some well-deserved rest from Pokémon battles, Red leaves his trusted Pikachu in Professor Oak's laboratory. Oak has recently installed a new power generator designed to provide electricity to Pallet Town more efficiently, and Pikachu willingly helps generate power for the town.
Thanks to the money saved from the improved power system, Pallet Town has constructed a new harbor, allowing young trainers to travel to distant regions by ferry.
Like many classic Pokémon adventures, the game starts in Red's bedroom. After heading downstairs, his mother tells him that Professor Oak wants to see him. At Oak's lab, Red learns that Pikachu accidentally damaged an important valve inside the generator. Fortunately, Oak believes his longtime colleague, Professor Elm in Johto, may have the replacement part.
Red boards the newly built ferry and travels to Johto, where Professor Elm provides the required replacement component. Before Red leaves, however, Elm asks him to deliver a mysterious Pokémon Egg back to Professor Oak for examination.
After returning to Pallet Town, repairing the generator, and presenting the Egg to Oak, the Egg hatches into an unknown Pokémon, prompting Oak and Red to return to Johto once again so Elm can study the mysterious creature.
At this point, the story asks a simple question: after conquering Kanto, defeating the Elite Four, and seeing nearly every Pokémon in the region, why not begin a brand-new journey through Johto?
From there, the Johto adventure begins—but this time, your actions occur alongside the events of Pokémon Gold and Silver, potentially influencing or changing familiar moments from the Generation II storyline rather than simply replaying them.

Known Bugs & Issues
The available demo contains several known issues documented by the developer.
- Moving girl event when travelling between Pallet Town and Route 21 may behave incorrectly.
- Pokémon removal event inside Professor Elm's Lab is unfinished. Players are advised to release their Kanto team and continue with only Pichu for the intended experience.
- Tile errors exist in Cherrygrove City and one interior house.
- Access to Crystal's house and the guide gentleman's house in Cherrygrove has been temporarily removed because of known errors.
- Players should avoid speaking to the Sailor in Cherrygrove due to an unresolved issue.
- Walking animation during the Gold encounter requires further work.
- Development is ongoing, so additional unfinished content and bugs should be expected.
