About This ROM Hack
Pokemon Fire Black is a French Pokémon FireRed overhaul that began development in October 2018 with the goal of giving longtime FireRed players a reason to experience Kanto again from a fresh perspective. Rather than simply increasing the difficulty or adding newer Pokémon, the project completely reimagines many aspects of the original game through an alternate storyline, redesigned maps, stronger trainers, updated Pokémon mechanics, and extensive graphical improvements.
Version 1.3, released on September 22, 2024, is the hack's largest update so far. It introduces the Physical/Special Split, DS-style graphics throughout the game, additional Pokémon, new moves, numerous balance adjustments, and many quality-of-life improvements. The hack also features unlimited TMs, Fairy-type support, modern experience mechanics, and a carefully revised Pokédex featuring Pokémon from multiple generations alongside several original additions.
The project is designed for players who want a more challenging but fair version of FireRed while enjoying a completely different take on the Kanto region.
Story Overview
Unlike the original FireRed, Pokemon Fire Black tells an entirely new version of Kanto's story.
Kanto has fallen under the control of Team Rocket, whose influence extends throughout the entire region. The once-familiar journey now takes place in a world where the villains already hold significant power.
Professor Oak secretly works alongside a resistance organization known as The Dracologists, whose members include several Gym Leaders. Their hope is that one of Oak's new Trainers will become strong enough to stand against Giovanni and stop Team Rocket from tightening its grip on Kanto.
Throughout the adventure, players uncover conspiracies, meet new characters, experience additional story events, and face choices that were never part of the original FireRed narrative.
The journey asks whether you can become the hero capable of restoring Kanto—and whether you can uncover everything Team Rocket has been hiding.

- Physical/Special Split: Battle mechanics now follow Generation IV rules, allowing moves to behave according to their individual categories instead of their types.
- Fairy Type: Fairy typing has been implemented alongside the modern battle system.
- Generation Expansion: Pokémon from the first three generations are available, with selected Generation IV evolutions and several original Pokémon and Fakemon added.
- New Starter Pokémon: Choose between Larvitar (Embrylex), Bagon (Draby), or Slakoth (Parecool) instead of the traditional Kanto starters.
- Updated Pokémon Roster: Numerous Pokémon have received stat, type, move, or ability adjustments to better fit the hack's balance.
- DS-Style Graphics: Nearly every Pokémon sprite has been replaced with DS-inspired artwork, alongside updated battle interfaces, menus, and environmental graphics.
- Expanded Pokédex: The National Pokédex is available from the beginning, with redesigned encounter locations across Kanto.
- Improved Experience System: Your active Pokémon now gains experience when successfully catching wild Pokémon.
- Unlimited TMs: Technical Machines can be reused indefinitely.
- New Moves: Several additional attacks have been introduced to take advantage of the Physical/Special Split.
- Updated NPCs and Side Content: New NPCs, optional mini-quests, and revised in-game trades help expand the adventure.
- Ability Reminder Improvements: Move Reminder NPCs are more accessible thanks to hidden mushrooms placed throughout Kanto.
- Improved Shops: Various shops have been adjusted to better support progression.
- Indoor Running: Players can run inside buildings.
- Enhanced Shiny Rate: Shiny Pokémon now appear at approximately 1 in 1,365 encounters.
- Version 1.3 Improvements: Added six additional Pokémon (including Mamoswine and Roserade), updated trainer rosters, revised wild encounters, balance adjustments, bug fixes, and numerous graphical improvements.
Known Bugs & Issues
Some known issues remain despite the extensive polish:
- Unlimited TMs may occasionally disappear if the learning animation is skipped. They can later be repurchased in-game.
- The post-game island map does not accurately represent the modified island region, and Fly locations there may not function correctly.
- Weavile may occasionally display graphical glitches because it replaces Spinda's sprite behavior.
- Players are advised to keep at least two Pokémon in their party to avoid problems during double battles.
- The female protagonist is fully playable, but some dialogue still incorrectly treats her as the male protagonist because older scripts were never fully rewritten.
