About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Yellow Plus is a simple, faithful enhancement of Pokémon Yellow intended for players who want to experience the original Kanto adventure with minimal mechanical disruption. It does not add new types, generations, or canonical features beyond quality‑of‑life balance improvements. Instead, this hack keeps the classic feel of Yellow while addressing long‑standing issues in the base game’s mechanics and balance.
The core design philosophy is “Play Yellow the way it should have worked” — preserving nostalgia while fixing outdated or buggy mechanics and ensuring all 151 Pokémon are obtainable.
Story Overview
The storyline remains exactly the same as the original Pokémon Yellow: you begin in Pallet Town, receive Pikachu from Professor Oak, journey across Kanto, collect Gym badges, thwart Team Rocket’s plans, and challenge the Elite Four and Champion. There are no narrative changes, added regions, or new side stories — only gameplay balance improvements and completion of the Pokédex.
Key Features
- All 151 Pokémon Obtainable: Every Pokémon from the original 151 species can be caught in the wild or acquired through in‑game events, completing the classic Pokédex without glitches or missing evolutions.
- Critical Hit Rate Fixed: The crit rate is standardized to the intended 1/16 chance, and moves/items such as Focus Energy and Dire Hit now work as expected — fixing major legacy bugs in the original Yellow.
- Type Effectiveness Updated: Classic Gen I weaknesses and strengths are rebalanced to reflect updated type charts:
- Ghost is now super effective against Psychic
- Poison is normally effective against Bug
- Ice is not very effective against Fire
- Bug is not very effective against Poison and Ghost
- These changes keep the spirit of Gen I while correcting known oddities.
- Trade Evolutions Adjusted: Pokémon that originally required trading to evolve now evolve at Level 37, simplifying progression without needing link trades.
- Optional Surf TM Patch: Two versions are provided:
- One patch replaces the TM that Brock gives you with TM Surf, allowing Pikachu (or other Pokémon) to learn Surf.
- The other patch leaves the TM unchanged for purists.
Known Bugs & Issues
As of Version 1.3, no major gameplay bugs are widely reported — this version is believed to be stable for full runs.Minor engine oddities (such as palette glitches or emulator‑specific behavior) may still occur because the underlying Pokémon Yellow engine is over two decades old.
No formal bug tracker is available, so undocumented edge‑case issues may exist.
